This is one of those beengs that started out smelling like rubber when I received it. Then after waiting for six months....the smell goes away. The flavors in this tea seem tight. Not a lot of flavors singing their individual notes. It hits you all at once. Took six brews to get it to settle down.....though nothing special is emerging. This may be one that will come into its own......I can only hope. Right now I can't say much about it. Its okay.

Acidic, in a refreshing way, nuts and hay, very active. Mouth feel is heavy. My tongue is tingling. Hints of chickory ? Interesting indeed.

2007 Purple leaf cake.
When I first got this cake around February I was not too impressed by it. I have not tried it since then so I decided to bring it out today and give it a test run. First thing I noticed was how dark the brew was. Very dark for a 2007. The smell is sweet, slightly floral with some bitterness and a faint hint of smoke. The flavor was actually quite good. Nice sweetness, enjoyable amount of astringency, good strength. The only defect in the tea that was eminent was the mouthfeel. When first sipped the flavor hits you but then dissipates very quickly. I very happy with these results and I did not enjoy it as first but now I think it is quite tasty.

This took about 1yr for the rubber scent to go away and another year for the astringency to mellow. Brews a dark amber. Leaves smell of shu. First couple of brews taste like mild shu. At the forth however, something good happens. Leaves are exibiting a wonderful sweet smell. Soup has flavors of wood and great honey notes.....then a nice sweetness. Wow this has really changed. Only got six brews tonight.....will continue with it tomorrow. Nice change of pace.

2000 Yunnan Hong Tai Chang
2000 Yunnan Hong Tai Chang, the 2 oz PS sample -
6 g brewed in 170 mL yixing.
15 sec rinse, flash, flash, 5, 15, 25, 40, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250 sec - 11 infusions.
Still a pleasant aroma after 5 infusions, liquor holding on nicely-

First 8 infusions tells me this tea has aged well. Aroma cup still offering intensity- starting to give more floral scent in place of toasted grain. High caffeine yet no bitterness or dryness. Flavor begins to thin.

Astringency - none
Smoke - not even a trace
Dryness- none
Mouthfeel - silky smooth and buttery
Hui gan - fleeting but pleasant
Flavor - roasted breadfruit, chestnut, yeast, flax/straw, dough.
Aroma - Sweet, balsam and dried cherry.
Overall value - 49$ a cake? No
Purchase again - The 2 oz sample is as far as I'll take this one.
Although I enjoyed this session, I had higher expectations. I prefer a tea with a bit more feistiness - this one yielded to easily. I will say however that this tea had an extremely refreshing quality to it - quite thirst quenching and filling. The first few infusions left a tingling on the tip of my tongue and the upper sides of the cheeks. My fiance passed by and had a cup around my 5th brew and said it tasted like "cornmeal"- which is just a weird thing to say about a tea.
Good tea, not amazing though.

Nice review, thanks. This is the shu cake right? I was very impressed with it the first time I had it and much less so the second. I recall it as being light for a shu, but with your short steeps, it sure looks like a sheng! Great photos ... once again showing the value of a visual record.Consilium wrote:

I've had cornmeal aroma recently, from the aged Menghai area brick that I've been drinking. The first time I brewed it there was this flavor memory that I couldn't pin down, some redolence of childhood and more recent aroma memory at the same time. After 8-9 cups I came up with 'tamales', and after further cups realized it was something between cornbread/cornmeal, and autumn leaves.

2003 Dayi Yiwu Arbor
Trying out a sample of 2003 Dayi Yiwu Arbor that I got from Pu-erh Shop.
The beeng material had a brownish red hue to it before steeping. Based on the rinses, I decided to do the early infusions with very short infusion times. I used 0, 0, 3, 3, 5, 5, so far and the color is a deep rich reddish amber with great clarity. This one is going to go a long way. Taste of plums with sweetness far outweighing any astringency but enough astringency to make you salivate while you sip it.
Astringency - slight
Smoke - a fair amount giving a decidedly tobacco nose to the infusions
Dryness- slight
Mouthfeel - silky smooth and buttery
Hui gan - pleasant
Flavor - sweet plums backed with leather
Aroma - earthy, sweet, plums
Overall value - good
Purchase again - Possibly, but I have so many others to try. This was one I really enjoyed though.
