My Guinomi from Lucien Koonce has arrived, it's position in the Kiln made all 4 faces react differently.

Notes from Lucien

The clay used in the piece is a stoneware body. local to Erect, NC. Adjacent to Seagrove, NC, and part of the eastern Piedmont region of North Carolina, the area was, and still is, known for its excellent stoneware clays, very suitable for the salt glazing tradition in groundhog kilns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seagrove). Thus, treat it as any other matured stoneware clay object. The guinomi has been wood fired to 2300+ degrees Fahrenheit. The only addition to the clay were the feldspar inclusions, which are the white melts on the surface. ~Lucien

The piece you are interested in...mentori guinomi...I still have. It is of a local clay from Seagrove, NC, where I used to live, and I had set it aside for myself. It was in a national invitational and juried show (DIRECTions; Frankie G. Weems Gallery; Meredith College; Raleigh, NC.) last year that featured ceramic work utilizing local clays.

The sake cup measures 2.5" H x 2.75" W x 2.75"D, and I will sell it for $95.00, plus shipping (payable through PayPal); it is signed. All of my work is hand formed through a process known as "kurinuki", which entails the piece to be hollowed out by hand. Once the solid clay form has been cut on the outside, I use a loop tool to carve out the interior.

It is quite large for a Guinomi, maybe instead of Tea, or Sake, I will use it for Malt Whisky

A new cup by Yamamoto Takuo that I got from Mago....



It's perfect sized for my Novak shiboridashi! I didn't have any sort of cup with the "fawn" spots -- though I had seen most of that type with hagi, this cup is actually a glazed porcelain. I think it fits the concept of "kawaii" very well...!!

The cup is made by Watanabe Tozo, and artwork by his daughter Miwako. It is made of Sado red clay. Tested this against Shigaraki cup. This red clay gives better aroma compared to Shigaraki which gives better deep/smooth feeling but less aroma.

It's a small ceramic to rest a matcha spoon or chopsticks on. It's made by a Korean potter, Choi Min Rok, who is from Yeoju, a large pottery town about 1 hour from Seoul.

Picked up this cup locally with two others like it a few weeks back but only recently got around to cleaning it up and using it. So, with some dong ding...

Ummm... feel free to ignore the pony(it's a mini My Little Pony by the name of Tealove), she's not attached, the pic was just taken for another site, lol.

White porcelain is just plain boring, IPT. Too sterile for my tastes so I tend to the more creative teaware which China seems to have stopped producing long ago. Even most Yixing teapots leave me cold as they have little personal touches to them. Copy, copy, copy, endlessly. I'll take brown rice to white rice anytime. Much more flavor and more nourishing.
