Hi Victoria,
Ohhh. This perhaps explains why I've seen on some sites, chawan with pour-spouts?Does the foam remain intact?
Love to see a pic of foamy matcha in your precious new summer chawan!:D
I will share new babies soon, one just arrived from landrydeese off of etsy (one I think doesn't look so renaissance-faire-ish) - but might be a few days though, Mom in ICU, gotta drive down to L.A. :(
TeaChat will be a comfort - all the pretty wares to gaze at.
Be well all.
I'll be looking in.
Peace.
ps - might try to post pics of my Matt Brown and LandryDeese before I start my drive.

Yes the foam remains, you pour quickly, and empty your prep bowl. I will try to take a shot this afternoon. I want to try out my new Kira-no-mori matcha from O-cha.

I love this bowl from Happylake Art on Etsy. I think the artist just intended it to have an irregular shape and not necessarily a "spout" but it works perfect for making matcha to share or to pour into other vessels.

Ooooooh - I just got some Kira-no-mori too! I'm just about to try it in the new landrydeese (which arrived about 2 hours ago - already washed, sanitized and ready!).
Pics here in a moment.
Must indulge before I start drive.

Wow those are both cool! I have been watching LandryDeese for a bit now too.
That cup is so unique inside! Can you describe it?

Okay, I couldn't resist, here's more of the L Deese piece:

There's a little dancing person in there - could it be some sort of tea or chawan fairy or sprite? Thea? Definitely dancing though.
The inside of the chawan has the presence of greys, muted rusty-rose/burgundies and pinks, muted jade-greens and the surface undulates smoothly - no sharp edges, but smooth hills and valleys. Thea's head is actually one of the parts that is coming up out of the bottom of the chawan.

Okay, Thea doesn't seem right - how about Chawani, the tea bowl fairy?

Hi Victoria,
In the pics of the landry deese piece, the matcha is Kiri no mori I just received from o-cha.
I have to say after a first taste, I am coming down on the side of Waku and Den's miyabi.
The Kiri (just first impressions from a first taste mind you) seems too "green" and sort of vegetal grassy for me. Not very complex. A kind of sweetness in aroma, but not on palate.
Also don't like the container - plastic lid doesn't fit tightly (not gonna come off, but spins easily and wiggles; and the tea comes in a foil bag inside the container). I like the Waku and Miyabi containers better - lids screw down tight, no bag to deal with. I think the Kiri lid is loose enough to allow fridge odors in much more readily.
Cheers!

The LandryDeese pics always make me think of body parts... like butt cheeks or something. Odd and interesting!

That MossBeach chawan is delightful... nice job Matt. :D

And Victoria, thanks for posting that darn spouty chawan... now I have to go check out that store.

Sarah
***This organic blend is earthy & spicy, with a fragrant aroma & smooth flavor to captivate the senses. Naturally sweetened in the Kentucky sunshine & infused with natural energy. Equally delicious when served piping hot or crisply chilled.***

Thanks Sarah! She has one in blue that is very pretty too!

Seeker - I totally agree with you about the Kira-no-mori. It is not as sweet as the Den's and more astringent too. And you are right about the packaging. I should have kept it in the foil and used a mini clip or something. We might just have to try to tweak the parameters a bit and maybe it will be better.

Here's my pic:

Looking at lots of them and wanting many, I finally took the plunge on this beauty because of its age and pristine condition and that it needed a loving home. There is something really special about holding a summer bowl, you are really almost forced to hold it with two hands thus making it feel very ceremonial and special.

This is a signed Japanese Vintage Chawan - probably 50+ years old. It is just a gorgeous piece, with a light glaze that is opalescent which forms a tiny pool in the center.

That is the absolute ugliest thing I've ever seen. I suggest you send it to me so I can dispose of it properly.

Very nice. Wish I had all your wares.

Victoria, Wow! :o Beautiful vintage summer chawan w/ matcha!!- thank you for sharing! Downside - now I simply must have a summer chawan! (natsu?).
Keep me posted on parameter tweaking - I agree, will be interesting to see what we can coax out of this matcha.
Also, I started to try the clip - but kept getting little puffs of tea dust as I manipulated the bag; imagined this happening every time - irritating. So, I cut a rectangle of saran wrap, folded it in half to make perfect size square, put the matcha in its can, lay the saran over the can, apply cheap plastic lid over the saran, and voila, tight seal. Hope it keeps working. Tossed the foil bag.
Sadly, no matcha while I'm away (I haven't traveled w/ matcha), but I did bring some nice gyokuro and some 18 yr old loose leaf puer; should hold me til I'm home.
Peace.

Hey Victoria,
What are the dimensions of your vintage summer chawan? H x W?
Just curious.
