Heh heh...my hesitation with Strommen has been that his shipping is something like $20 to send a fairly small package along a 3 hr trip from Chicago to Indianapolis. That's got to be some downright magical bubblewrap he uses.
But I have considered buying certain pieces of his because of his rough style. The yunomi I now use isn't exactly wabi sabi, but it does have different glazes which gives the surface different textures. It also has these three thicker ridges (it almost looks a bit like bamboo, really) that makes it fun to grasp and run my fingers up and down on while I ponder bemusedly upon a myriad of Deep Topics. (I probably look "special" when I do that...yeich.)
Anyway, Strommen's pieces do look like they'd be fun to handle, even if they would murder a chasen.

You tease and torment! That is indeed beautiful. He took down the blue one like that. I was really wavering, so he saved me the purchase. LOL!

True, true... AND she has at least two more of those cups to torment us with.

I wish I would have photographed the first package I ever ordered from him. I had won one piece and then went crazy and won 3 more. He sent them all together in a HUGE box, everything jigsaw-puzzled into said box and wrapped in cardboard. It looked like he grabbed any spare stuff for packing and threw it in. I had a good laugh at that, but yeah the $20 shipping fees are steep.
However you can usually win most of his auctions at the starting price or at least less than $10, not sure if you could go to his studio and buy anything for under $30 direct so maybe its a deal.
Nice cup Victoria, I was just browsing his store on etsy the other night and saw a few very nice things I'd love to get, maybe next week

Just have to settle for my $.49 Goodwill cups I got a few weeks ago, holds just the right amount from my smaller teapots so I like em!

I have a six of his pieces and can counter that conjecture with fact. All but one is perfectly functional - my chasen is just fine and I use them often. He uses shino style glazes and hand altering after throwing, which gives a rough _appearance_. I wouldn't expect anyone to buy one unless they liked that style, it is very different, but I wouldn't stop someone from buying it over concerns for chasen either.

Only if you had felt compelled to create a little
coffeepot.
Little teapots are just fine.
