I found this through Japanese auction. It's a gold mine :)
It looks like there are books, not sure if they are in English ;)

These are on ebay from the Japanese Culture store:

Raku Book

Raku Book 2, seller states that it includes a section with makers' marks.

Book of Chawan Makers' Marks with Artist Contact Info

That store even has a book on chashaku scoops ;)

Ah, thanks for pointing that out! The second book looks interesting indeed -- the title is roughly "What IS Raku?". Might not be a bad first book on the subject....

I wonder if I can buy from Japan for less without going through these guys

Oh you can read Japanese? Then they might be useful to you! OK too many non-teaware-depicting posts here, my next post in this thread will be when I get new teaware ;)

"Japanese auction"? Do you mean Yahoo Japan?

Look what I found! A little gnome drank all the tea I brewed, got tea drunk, and passed out!

Yes, I mean Yahoo Japan

I did find the books on Amazon -- $19 a piece isn't so bad. Beats Ebay :)

Although shipping them would cost something like $25

Yup Olivier posted Amazon Japan links above too... Arg, and I was trying to put a ceiling on my teaware purchases! But those books would be wonderful :)

eBay sellers typically mark up these books by at least 100%.

So even when you pay EMS shipping for the Amazon Japan books, you are still saving lots of $.

If shipping costs are a concern, wait until you want to order several books, then group them together.

As I mentioned to someone else in a PM, the advantage of eBay is that the sellers give you a preview of what's in the book. Once you know which book you want, it makes more sense to go to Amazon Japan and buy the book at half the eBay price.

They are likely to be available via Amazon Japan for a very long time. You shouldn't feel that you have to rush :)

What I suggest is that you create an Amazon Japan account and add these books to your wishlist. The account section of the site is fairly well translated into English, as is the Wishlist button for adding a given book to your wishlist. Once saved, you can go back any time and place an order for them.

Viewing your wishlist, once created, is a little trickier since the [View] Wishlist button isn't translated into English. It's the one at the top of every page, right between the View Cart button and the Your Account button.

I have three pages' worth of books wishlisted on Amazon.co.jp. These days I've learned to take my time about ordering; there are just too many books that tempt me, so now I buy only after very careful deliberation.

The Raku wa nan daro ka? Book (black cover) is not available immediately -- 3 to 5 weeks before they ship, which is a bit of a pain. The white one is immediately shippable though.

Split the "show off your teaware thread"

by trent » Apr 29th, '08, 20:35

I love this thread more so than any other on teachat, BUT, it is extremely difficult to manage.

I don't know what you guys would think of this, but I think we should split this thread into categories.

These wouldn't have to be the final ones, but I was thinking of something like:

(dividing by origin of teaware)
Japanese
Chinese
Victorian/english
Other

OR

(dividing by type)
Cups
Pots/Gaiwans
Kettles
Other

OR

Any other divisions you guys think would be better.

Do you think this is a good idea?
