Yes , it is a Japanese Kyusu .

This little fellow holds 750 ml. , if it were filled to the lower lid seat flange .

It weighs in at between 17 - 18 Oz. , minus the ivory handle .

It was made from one sheet of silver ( no seams ) using the repousee method, and another single sheet was used for the spout .
A cast silver head is a feature of both the lid & spout .
The spout and head(s) were then silversoldered to the body .
The repousee was designed in such a way as to conceal these silversolder joints .

Silver impregnated fibers/fabrics are in common use as packing material for wound care , such as : stab wounds , gunshots , MERSA etc.
This is due to the fact that silver , when refined properly , has antibacterial properties when within the human body .

That being said , silver does oxidize ....especially in humid conditions .
It's pretty important to rinse it off with real hot water ( I use boiling water ) and to dry silver well , right away .

Thanks to everybody who took a peek at the teapot , and also to those who added posts !

Nice work bonjiri and welcome!

I received today a chawan for my second chabako (It looks better than the chawan I already had) and it fits well the shifuku.

I also received what was described by the vendor as a little chawan for nodate. As it is quite small (120 ml I guess) I think I will use it as a teacup.

Both are lovely, Olivier :) And the first is certainly a perfect fit for that wonderful shifuku!

Cory .. your work is amazing!

You just take the link to the picture

and use this syntax (without the "*")

matcha chawan

by bonjiri » May 2nd, '09, 15:46

learning how to post photographs

thanks ! i did it ! WOW ! COOL!

this particular chawan was fired on shells on the shomen. the 'emerald' glass was created by using 'Keawe' ash or hawaiian mesquite.

this particular chawan was inspired by Lanikai beach. this beach has the most amazing emerald, azure blue green waters and beautiful sand on oahu, hawaii.

Cory, thanks for coming around here and sharing your art. It's truly beautiful and well-designed. This morning I was very torn. I have a new deishi hagiyaki chawan that came in the mail the same day as your shino. I have used your bowl every day since then, and this is the first morning I could break away from it to "christen" my hagi.

I know you love tea and matcha in particular. Which matcha are you usually drinking?
