wild chawan , saggar fired

by bonjiri » Jun 28th, '09, 02:09

need to get back to doing shino in saggars, cone 10

had some wild results. using flowers etc !

chip, thanks for your kind words ! i'd like to incorporate the black gold into some yuteki tenmoku pieces. one component of the black/gold glaze is albany slip which is obsolete. but i found a 25 pound bag of it ! so this means more experimentation and FUN !

aloha !

... really lovely piece, Cory. Can I say wow again? I am looking forward to seeing the results of more experiments.

How did you use flowers in this?

thank you kindly sir

by bonjiri » Jun 28th, '09, 02:15

thank you kindly chip !

the flowers are loaded/packed into a saggar. a saggar is a clay container w/ a lid to contain the reduction/materials within. fired to cone 10, magical things happens. in this case i used african tulips, abundant near the old studio.

i need to get back into doing saggars, since my forms are looser now.

was having a rough day throwing today.

maybe i need to stick w/ softer clays.

thank you for your kind words !

Cory,
Wow!
Those are amazing (the albany and saggar).
A whole new vibe it seems in terms of what I've seen.
Really cool, vibrant, exciting.

Best,
Jim

jim

thank you kindly

its work in progress. funny, i was looking thru some experiments and i even surprised myself.

need to keep experimenting.

just researching some old raku chojiro forms and looking thru a book specifically on matcha chawan.

partial list my teachers/influences. kato tokuro, miwa kyusetsu, raku chojiro, raku kichizaemon, hamada shoji, kawakita handeishi, kaneshige toyo, arakawa toyozo, rosanjin kitaoji, isezaki jun, kakurezaki ryuichi, harada shuroku, kumano kuroemon. this partial list are my inspirations.

rosanjin quote. " to understand the true value of Japanese calligraphy, paintings, architecture, landscape gardening and crafts, one must have knowledge of chanoyu."

i wish i could share all my books i have... i have about 30 books on chadogu and growing. a recent acquisition is a cool book on sen no rikyu's chadogu. whoa ! great photos too.

hehe

aloha

Do you still have a supply of Albany Slip? Not available most places any more. An almost exact replacement is Albert Slip.

I'm guessing that the this glaze has the Slip, some Custer Spar (a majority amount 59%) and a relatively large amount of Mn02.

??????

That is a stunning glaze. Is that two glazes? An oil spot effect?
