A new oolong from a trip to Wing Hop Fung today: Royal Zhangshu Lake oolong from Taiwan. Their web site describes it as a 'semi-oxidized, earthy brew'. I found the dry tea leaves to be fairly dark, and very tightly rolled. I took just a small amount--enough to cover the bottom of the small 2.5oz/75mL gaiwan--for my first brewing, and after a couple of infusions the leaves nearly fill the gaiwan.

The first impression was rich, thick liquor, sweet and floral and rich, but when several combined infusions sat for a while in my 10 oz cup, the sweetness was much less pronounced, and a deeper, earthier flavor appeared. I am used to some flavor changes as teas sit: I typically brew up a quart of my teas at a time, and drink that from a thermos over several hours during my workday. But I've not noticed such a rapid and profound change in any of my lightly oxidized Ali Shan and Tie Guan Yin Oolongs before. I guess that's why its described as "earthy" rather than predominantly sweet. Very interesting.

Just had a fantastic Winter 2009 Li Shan that I purchased during a visit to the Stone Leaf Teahouse in Middlebury, VT this weekend. I've always loved Li Shan, but this one was just outstanding. There was a really pronounced, slightly sweet pineapple flavor and a really intense floral aroma. Was still going strong after the fifth infusion. Wish I had bought more than 1oz of this!

I just got a sample pack of oolongs from Floating Leaf and am drinking the Oriental Beauty. Lots of flavor! But I'm not sure what I think of it. I brewed with a small (2 - 3 oz) gaiwan half full of dry leaf for 30s, 20s, 15s to play with the intensity. I think I might have overdone the first 2 infusions and with that amount of leaf probably could have done 10s.

I think the Oriental Beauty is more like black tea than typical oolongs...try brewing it like you would Chinese black tea :)

Thanks for the tip. I'll be doing another round tonight when I get home. It won't be the first tea I've had to play around with.

Trying out a sample from Golden Moon: Sugar Caramel Oolong. Kettle's heating up right now. Hope it goes well with my nightly piece of dark chocolate!

From Teaspring. Was just informed there will be none this year from them. :( I have only 2 more servings left. My breakfast serving is 750 ml equal to 3 cups of tea.
