I would expect that part of the chop is a reign name, since that is the method used to identify the year when China was still an imperial nation.

Great find, Etorix! Reminds me of Templeton from the animated adaptation of "Charlotte's Web." I'm always on the lookout for nezumi-themed, Japanese tea wares and ceremony accessories.

Here's a quick snapshot of my brass incense burner (koro), depicting various auspicious artifacts (e.g., mallet, mouse, and granary key). They're commonly seen with Daikoku, the god of wealth and farmers. In Shinto mythology, the mallet grants the wielder three wishes when struck three times.

Acquired this jar several months back. Is it even antique?

Anyone have any ideas what the chops mean or how old this jar could be?

I'd like to use this to store tea in, however it has a funk smell to it that I have battled on and off. I tried soaking it and bleaching it out. The smell went away temporarily, but came back (thought slightly fainter). Maybe I'll really soak it in bleach and see if that does it.
