I'll be at Tokyo National University of the Arts (Geidai) this coming fall with a group of our NHIA students.
Have you made the decision yet?
If so....... I'll see you there.

Hi John,
Yes, I've made my decision and unfortunately I won't be going. While the offer had much prestige associated with it, there was no funding/salary involved. Tokyo is an expensive place to live, and given the economy there/market conditions to sell work into, I feel that the hardship placed on my family would be just too great/unfair. (Visions of the movie Hazan filling my head) Also I have the feeling that the position is geared towards academia, folks on sabatical, rather than artists/potters.
Perhaps in my next life......
Best,
R

Hello Robert,
Interesting reasons why you aren't going to Geidai. You are especially right in saying trying to live in Tokyo without funding would be a drain.

Robert,
I'm sorry to hear that the opportunity did not work out for you there... and completely understand the reasoning behind the decision to decline the invitation. Tokyo is not a cheap place to reside in just about every way.
I was hoping that you'd be there at Geidai when we were over there. We'll have to meet at some other venue someday.
You should still feel very good about recieving the invitation. That was a nice thing.
best,
..............john

Thanks John and Dave for the response.
A lot of life is timing as they say and unfortunately it didn't work out this time. I'm always looking for opportunities to work in Japan again and for now, probably something shorter in length would work out better rather than an actual "move" as the Geidai offer would've entailed.
Best,
R
