I had a pet tarantula once. She was quite calm, didn't mind walking up onto my hand or shoulder. The males tend to be a bit skittish, but I wouldn't mind having a female again.

Though my cats might think I'd acquired a toy just for them...

Ah spiders........

Brings back memories of our rural house in Japan..... a strange house with the bathroom vanity in the kitchen which behind the mirror lived a HUGE spider. At first we were aghast at the thought of sharing our house with ..... this...... this THING which was probably the size of the palm of your hand! Determining that he was harmless... probably as afraid of us as we were of him, we named "him" Terry, and as the months passed we were always on the look out for Terry. We began to worry if we hadn't seen him for a few days, and finally come spring, we accepted the fact that Terry had moved on however he continues to live in our hearts.

On the other hand there are our tenants who are quite upset that a few spiders are now seeking refuge amongst their plethora of house plants and the various bugs which they support.....

An ecosystem at work........

Cheers,
R

I kind of believe spiders are the least offensive bugs. I leave them alone as long as they leave me alone. Just saw a tiny tiny spider dangling in front of my computer monitor

Was he surfing the web  ?

Actually they're not bugs (insects) but arachnids.

I believe it is proper to call them bugs, but not insects.

Those teensy tiny ones really amaze me.
I guess when it comes to spiders the smaller the better.

That's a good one!

A few minutes ago, a lady bug landed on my keyboard. It stayed around the F buttons so my constant typing has not driven it away yet  Obviously everybody want to surf the web!

Why would I click on a thread called "Spiders!"? Why??

I'm with Mrs. Chip. They need to be gone. I've read that citrus spray or vinegar around the perimeter will deter them but it needs to be reapplied often. Eeep... no more pics, plsthxbye.

Only if you wish to remain inaccurate, bugs are insects that have piercing and sucking mouthparts- think aphids, leafhoppers, cicadas etc or hemiptera.

Really, you are going to lecture us on not using the common
phrase of bugs? I disagree. Using insect is incorrect but bug is a generic term for several groups of invertebrate animals, including insects, arachnids, centipedes, millipedes and other closely related arthropod. I hope you always ask for a tissue and not a Kleenex.

Slang term, 'bugs' includes microbes - bacteria and viruses, as well as the creepy-crawlies.

"Oh no, I've got that nasty swineflu bug that's been going around, again!".

Colleague: "Hmmm, you're working late again."
Me: "Yeah, harvesting that batch of bugs I started growing up yesterday morning".

Have you tried Hedge Apples? Google them or check out http://hedgeapple.com/ to start. My grandparents always gathered up some and threw them under their house in the crawlspace. I think the site said that you can keep in indoors as well, but the lifespan of the "fruit" is only about 3 months. Check it out...totally natural and you can probably find some on the side of the road or park...hopefully they grow in your state. It's a free spider solution!

Good luck,
Lena
