This is not true at all. It is understandable to others, much like 小号 is understandable as small size in HK. It's not a zero sum solution.

Example if I say I want a 壶承 in HK would the seller give me 茶船? But if I go MY or CN (I think TW also), I ask for 茶船 (which in fact I want a tea boat), likely they'll give me this:

For me I would only accept 壶承 as the more appropriate Chinese term for tea boat. Mainly cause majority will know what I'm talking about.

And your idea of "more appropriate" is somewhat flawed. Just because more people use a word doesn't mean it's the "right" word to use. What do you call the place where you perform your bodily functions? In the UK you might say loo, in the US bathroom, in Canada washroom. Does that mean Brits and Canadians are wrong because they all understand bathroom and more people use that term? No. They're all correct.
