Shincha season's coming up, isn't it?
Hmm, very interesting -- thanks for that!Kevangogh wrote:There is no such thing as "shincha matcha". Matcha (and gyokuro) is supposed to be aged for several months before it is released. Of course, before that time comes the previous year's matcha will often run out and the current year's product will be sold out of lack of options, prior to it's optimum time. That does not make it "shincha", nor does it make it special. In fact if it hasn't been aged it won't be as good as the previous year's, older version which may still be in stock. There's nothing wrong with selling the current year's product before it's time, provided you realized that it's not going to be as good as something that has been aged properly. Selling "shincha" matcha or gyokuro is pure hype, they don't do this in Japan.
I did enjoy what I bought before but maybe I'll spend the money on something nice from last year, instead...

I'm going to order;
Sugimoto Shincha: www.sugimotousa.com
Den's Shincha: www.denstea.com
Does anyone know if Rishi Tea has offered shincha before?

@Kevangogh
Thanks for the info about shincha matcha/gyukoro.
I also ordered the Tanegashima Asamushi from o-cha along with some other shincha. Can't wait for its arrival.

I'm living here in Kyoto for the next year as a student of the ureasenke professional college of chado, anyone have some good recommendations for me to get in the shincha department while I'm here? I of course know about Ippodo but aside from that everything else I've done with tea has been completely matcha oriented.

Certainly a visit to Tsuen would be a must for shincha and just to check out the oldest tea shop in Japan.blairswhitaker wrote:I'm living here in Kyoto for the next year as a student of the ureasenke professional college of chado, anyone have some good recommendations for me to get in the shincha department while I'm here? This is interesting Chip- makes me feel OK about waiting a while and opening that bag of YM that's been sitting in the fridge.Chip wrote: Earliest is NOT necessarily the best, in fact it usually is not ... it is simply a marketing thing getting a very early picking to market ... similar to Darjeeling first flush.
I think I have sampled at least 20 shincha selections each year since I have been drinking sencha. I guess you can say I am into it.![]()

I must admit I'm excited for shincha though. Think it's going to be Kirameki this year... at least for the first round. The yen is pretty low last time I checked. Good for us...
