9 or 10, but I'm sure I'll pick up more. How many? I can't say. For some reason, they are far more tempting than teapots (which are tempting enough.) I'll stop when it gets embarrassing, I suppose.

I have {ahem} a few more than that, but somehow I'm still not embarrassed enough
I love your chawan-s. Very sorry that the first one was broken.
By the way, your second one - the teabowl with the lantern - almost certainly was made in honour of the year 2008. The
chokudai or poetic theme word for that year was
hi or "fire". People who make tea utensils often choose seomthing with that theme for the design. Sometimes it will even be paired with the zodiacal animal of the year; I have a chawan that shows a hibachi (lit. "fire bowl") decorated with mice (2008, Year of the Mouse)!

I don't think you can ever be embarrassed enough
not to acquire more teaware! Which is just as well...

Interesting. However, if you could hold and see the bowl, you would see aging that would not be accomplished in a year of drinking unless it was used daily. Even then I'm not sure. Also, the bowl is amazingly light and well crafted, in spite of not having a maker's stamp on it. The aging, the evenness of the glaze crackling, and the patina on the foot, the low selling price and description, all lead me to believe that this is quite old, at the very least definitely not a new product. I would imagine these things are cyclical though, right? Another year with a theme of lanterns, fire, glow, light?

I'll have to check my table of chokudai to see if "fire" or other fire-like words appeared in previous years. I don't think "fire" itself has, but I do think I remember "light" appearing. If you're interested, I'll look it up.
And, to paraphrase Freud, sometimes a lantern is just a lantern

It's a handsome design in its own right, and that may be its sole significance!

First finished, I have a few that just are the body or the spout on. I didn't like the way they came out though.
Thanks

Very nice gaiwan, Danibob. What is the approximate capacity? You are going to have a lot of fun with it!
It has a 5 oz capacity. Not too big but not tiny either. It's a very sturdy piece. I accidently dropped the lid on a hardwood floor and not even a little chip. Perfect for the first time user I'd say.

If Fallout 3 had a chawan, that would be it.
Nice piece.

Just to let you know, Geekgirl - "light" (
hikari, 光) was the chokudai for 1960.
