I know we had a discussion under the CD Japan thread, but it's buried now.
I just got a shipment today. I am a little dissapointed in that the "BLACK"
Tokoname I wanted is actually brown. Yeah, I know this is common, but
it's really a light brown compared to the pic:
Also I was expecting a lot of texture, and that also is not apparent.

But the good news is I bought two pots one for me and one for my SIL.
As it tuns out, I think I like her's just fine, and I might switch.
Her's (ummm mine) is a Banko pot from purple clay. I know it looks kind
of brown, but it's got a purple hue to it.

wow, that's quit a difference Vic. Did you say anything to the vendor? I'd be kinda pissed. Especially with the texture.

My new (and maybe last natsume, at least for a while) has just arrived. I will use it for matcha but I think I might be able to use to store some gyokuro since it is airtight enough.

Olivier, I've admired that Natsume but I've always shyed off of buying one because they don't seem airtight enough for me. Good metal tea caddies fit very snugly. You can feel the air escape from the cannister when you slide the top on. Are these lacquered caddies that tight?

Victoria, I would definitely complain about that black/brown discrepancy!
LOVE the flowered pot, though!

Not that tight but tight enough for keeping my gyokuro consumption for ten days which is sufficient for a 50g package. Even if a canister is airtight there is some air in it anyway.

WOW Victoria. I really wanted the pot in the photo, I'm glad I didn't order it right away. I would be so angry.

On another note (I forgot to ask in my last post), does anyone know where you CAN get a pot that looks similar to the one in the vendors photo? Minimalistic, black, maybe with some texture. It needs to be at an affordable price for a college student like me.

Just FYI (and I'm saying this generally since I suspect you both already know this), natsume-s are never intended to be airtight storage containers. They are meant only to hold matcha during the tea ceremony itself. Indeed, all matcha is promptly removed from the natsume - and put back into airtight storage - once the event is over.
In fact the lid should never fit so snugly that it requires any effort to remove. So if you happen to find one that's more airtight than usual, bonus, but indefinite storage is not their intended purpose.

Yeah, I guess I should write a letter on behalf of any other buyers.
I've just been a little overloaded lately. Not enough hours in the day!
Thanks all, for your nice comments.

Thanks, Chamekke. Does the same thing apply to the Chaire tea caddies? Only used during the ceremony, not for storage?

Than how do you store matcha?
