Here's a lovely bit of eye candy for you all: This piece is by Seigan and is made from one of his rarer glazes the Ice Split. The look is achieved by double firing; first the trademark Seigan blue, then followed by a white glaze over top. Where the white glaze splits you can see the blue. Really stunning in person, I'm not a good photographer and my current camera is not so hot either. It is really a gorgeous piece.

Thanks Victoria.

It's a piece from a few years ago. After doing a show in Yamaguchi and spending some time there, I came back fascinated, and still am, by kohiki. I found an old Korean (punchon) kohiki chawan and set out to reproduce it as best I could. In the west, this way of working/thinking tends to be frowned upon, however in Japan it is quite common as it helps one really understand a given piece, it's form and the various techniques used to create the piece. It also affords one a path to journey along in which one makes discoveries along the way while related to the original task, can be separate and quite exciting in their own right. Anyways, the above piece was done using some clay which I dug from an excavation site not far from here.

Below please find a chawan which tends to reference the original Korean punchon piece a little more closely.

Best wishes,
R

Oh, American Hagi, cool!

Clearly the Japanese have the notion down that imitation is the highest form of flattery. I don't see why American potters cannot follow this train of thought as well.

Not to misdirect any discussion, but imitation of master-level artwork is something found through most of Asia, and it's especially rampant in China (ancient and modern). I did a project in China where I investigated art forgers and how they branched off to do their own unique kinds of work, and even earn money of it too!
