Well, there is imitation, then there is forgery which is completely different of course.
Imitation perpetuates a form. Forgery is just wrong.

The debut of my two newest:

How I would LOVE to display - In the boxes all on one shelf:

But the reality is no boxes = more per shelf.
NINE instead of FOUR.

It's a harsh life, no?

Nice collection you have going there. I recognize more than a few of them.
Some of those glazes could be coming to a Hagi offer very soon ...

Thanks Dreamer & Chip!
Just 2 shelves done and I keep rearranging, I still have some more to
show.
The boxes - are off to the attic.

Chip, keep those hints coming!!

Speaking of imitation being the highest form of flattery.
Not to misdirect any discussion, but imitation of master-level artwork is something found through most of Asia, and it's especially rampant in China (ancient and modern). I did a project in China where I investigated art forgers and how they branched off to do their own unique kinds of work, and even earn money of it too!
I think it's a matter of intent as I sell my work as mine and while it may reference other work there is separation. Showing Korean punchon master Yoon Kwang-Cho my kohiki/punchon ware he commented that it was different than what he'd seen before. Finally, my Japanese potter friends tell me my work is so American while my American potter friends think that my work is so Japanese which places it just about where I'd like it to be given my life experiences so far.....
Much of ceramics is nuance which is why someone like former Japanese prime minister Hosokawa Morihiro can become a very good potter in a very short time, as he grew up around much good work and consequently developed his eye at a very young age, relatively speaking. Most of us are not so fortunate.
Cheers,
R

Maybe a stretch, but it may be akin to perfecting a foreign language.
Americans think I'm French, Canadians also, The French are unsure,
some think I'm from Canada, others are flummoxed to find an American
with a "French accent".....
BTW, nice shelves V.
Keep track of the boxes re. the warez.
Also I like the smaller boxes to mix up the height of separate pieces that are on the same shelf.

Re: The unofficial, official HAGI topic!
That is extremely impressive Victoria! I love all of those.
Re: The unofficial, official HAGI topic!
Wow Victoria you have so many nice hagi wares. Im guessing you voted can't have enough hagi ware
I just love the way hagi changes, mines already all crackled inside even though I soaked it in water before each session to slow the ageing process.
Will the ouside eventually crackle like the inside?

Yeah, quite nice. You should expect to see some of this glaze available to TCers soon, except in a unique style, specially made for us by Yamane Seigan!amorphiss wrote:Wow, i love the purples and greens on these! Where did you find those?

Re: The unofficial, official HAGI topic!
Living in an earthquake zone as I do, in general I prefer to keep pieces in their boxes. But, I can't read kanji (well, beyond basic words like "chawan" - not much help when you've got several of them!). So, how to identify what is in each?Victoria wrote:Just 2 shelves done and I keep rearranging, I still have some more to

One solution is to tuck a photo of the piece underneath the box's ribbon so that you have a sneak preview of what's inside without actually having to untie and unpack it.
I'm not as organized as I'd like to be with my photographs, but some day...! {steeples fingers meaningfully}
The other thing I used to do, with chawan-s that didn't come with their own boxes, was to store them in Rubbermaid's "Seal 'n Saver 5152" container. This 984 ml container held most standard-sized chawan very nicely, stacked beautifully, and was transparent so that you could see what was inside! Not elegant, but functional and compact. Unfortunately Rubbermaid has stopped making them...
