I hope you'll share the photographs so that I won't be so tempted by the ones you left behind!

Oh, I hear you. One thing that feeds it, I think, is the fact that it's actually quite difficult to find this quality of teaware locally (infamous local consignment shop notwithstanding - and what I find in there is castoffs). Don't you think that might be a factor? So for me, at least, there's always the feeling that if I find something special, it must be pounced upon immediately or the opportunity may be lost. Hou De's gaiwan being an actual case in point!

Someday, when I finally make it to Japan, I will find myself swimming in a sea of beautiful tea wares, of staggering variety and abundance. And my head will explode.

This is exactly my problem. I'm a sucker for hard to find, OOAK, and handcrafted things. Though I have plenty of mass-produced teaware, most of it is not easily found locally. So when I order- especially from overseas- I also have this idea that I must buy several things to "make it worth the shipping."

Meanwhile... back at the bank...

Here's one of my wants, but at $350, it's significantly out of my cost/benefit ratio gut-check range.

Geek, that piece has very earthy tones, and looks a bit "fossil" like to me. Which is stupendous! But you're right about the gut-check. I love that term - mind if I borrow it?

Well you fit right in with most of us on that point! This thread is probably 70% handmade Japanese-ware... here is a smattering of items that i've posted myself!

Ah yes, that second one... I've seen that before and sighed over it. It's so organic I just want to lick it. We should call this thread "wishes and wants."

Okay, which one-a you just succumbed to a Parker teabowl? *hands on hips*

I want this:

It's somewhere in the neighborhood of $60 for this chaire, but apparently I need to go purchase in person. Gah. I also want this:

by the same artist. I don't know how much he wants for it. I'm afraid to ask. Afraid that it will be "affordable" and afraid that it won't.

Oh yes, and this, (same artist):

Artist's name is Hank Murrow, and he fires in Eugene, OR.

Well, Rikyuu did say:
Sen no Rikyuu wrote:In the way of tea also, people with a true realization will come forth in later ages, and they will surely sense and share the aspiration that you and I have kept. If such a person extends a bowl of tea toward me - even though a hundred years have passed - it will moisten my bones; will not my departed spirit rejoice in accepting it?
I'm not sure how he'd feel about "mancha", though 8)

Scruff, I think that is heresy! Hopefully Sen Rikyu's spirit has a sense of humor.

And GeekGirl, I'll take that White/Orange Shino Chawan! What are the dimensions? I'll have to have my Eugene contacts look him up...

I would have bought either the Red or Orange ones above, but they were in the 2000-3000 range, and the current exchange rate ain't helping! Until I strike oil in my backyard or marry an heiress, my teaware budget is prob limited to about 1000 a year.... actually sounds better if you call it 90 a month!

His chawan may indeed fall into that range. :)
