 I have not had the Yuuki version, but the O-Cha was good last year. I will have to try the Yuuki.

Sae Midori is classified as a "natural Gyokuro" varietal, naturally sweet and very little bitterness or astringency. Some say it is too mild for their tastes. When this happens, the profile can be manipulated to make it more intensely flavorful.

BTW, Sae Midori is also a great home blender as well.

How would the Shincha version of Sae Midori differ from the regular version? I have a packet of O-Cha Sae Midori that I'm planning to open and savor tomorrow morning?

They are both very good. The shincha may be a bit more intense. Getting shincha is more of a celebration of a new harvest for me, not really so much about the shincha being that much different.

In honor of Spring I decided to go with shincha versions of 2 of O-Cha's organic Senchas - the Warashina Supreme and the Oku Yutaka. I can actually drink my morning tea on my back porch - although it does cool off quickly.

Woohoo, seemed like shincha would never come. Now it is coming full steam ahead.

It is weird, I don't see shincha on Zencha's pages, seems like they have to give you the keys to the vault.

These two are really different from each other. You will enjoy the complexity of the Warashina and the simplicity of the Oku Yutaka.

Zencha wrote:Because of the sudden fall in temperature, the young tea leaves, nearly 50% of our tea garden in Shizuoka, suffered frost damage.
One farmer in our Shizuoka tea garden said "it's a pain to face up to the fact that tea trees, tended with great care through a year, were damaged. But it can't be helped. It's a nature. We should humbly accept it and move on, then I start to feel an appreciation for at least 50% can be harvested".

In Yame, fortunately, there was no damage for cold weather and have a good harvest.
So, this year could be interesting for not only shincha but for ichibancha. Shizuoka is likely the biggest supplier of sencha, and it is not only sold as Shizuoka, but is used a lot in blending ... we could see shortages and price increases sooner or later.

It looks like the Shizuoka's from Yuuki-Cha should be fine...
Yuuki-Cha wrote:There was a cold spell at the end of March in Japan, especially Shizuoka. Many non-organic Shizuoka tea gardens had severe damage. However, the high grown Shizuoka organics that we are selling were not damaged at all by the cold spell because the tea bushes in these elevated organic tea gardens were not even active at that point. All reports from our growers in Uji, Shizuoka, Kagoshima, and Kumamoto indicate that everything is fine at the moment, and the weather is now starting to warm up nicely! Any further updates will be announced here.

Yeah, thanks Dresden. I saw that. Just generally speaking, supply could tighten up and this could place pressure on prices. I am not saying this will happen, but bears watching I guess.

Yup....I would think that in general there will be a spike similar to what we saw with tomato and orange prices this year due to the late freeze in Florida.

Any rate... I've just about got my Yuuki-Cha order sorted out:

1) Kagoshima Shincha Saemidori
2) Shizuoka Shincha Sayamakaori
3) Shizuoka Shincha Okuyutaka
4) Cherry Bark Tea Scoop
