According to Robert Yellin, shonzui is a type of underglaze cobalt blue. How it differs from sometsuke (another classification of blue-and-white ware) is not obvious to me! However, this page suggests that shonzui incorporates "colorful Chinese-style underglaze designs" ... so perhaps it's purely a matter of the design.Salsero wrote:I assume Kisen is a manufacturer, but what does Shonzui mean? Another style like kutani? The porcelain is actually a pale blue, not white, maybe that has something to do with it?
(Shonzui is the name of the Japanese man who brought the secret of porcelain manufacture back from China.)

Re: Yunomi search
I can confirm that "sushi yunomi" which I mentioned earlier in this thread, are indeed yunomi which are of extra large size, since you get more thirsty when you eat sushi.Salsero wrote: Are there such things as almost giant-sized yunomi?
It did work out and I received my gohonte hagi yunomi and plate today!Ritva wrote: From the pages of Japanese Green Tea Shops I found a link to Japanese Goods

Now this is dangerous!!! It is a service where you can buy things from Japanese online shops that don't ship overseas. It's run buy a young guy who speaks (well, writes) very good English. He has reasonable charges and very very cheap shipping costs! I ordered a hagi yunomi + plate and he takes only 6 USD for shipping them to Finland! Of course one needs to pay the shipping costs in Japan as well. I haven't received my yunomi yet so I don't know if it works but if it does- this is bad! There are so many gorgeous japanese ceramics sites!

The shipping was not quite as cheap (6 USD to Finland) as the guy from Japanese Goods estimated. However, because he had given me that estimation and I had already paid by PayPal, he didn't charge me the extra amount and I got shipping super cheap!
Re: Yunomi search
There are many Japanese potters who make large yunomi and these can be ordered directly from sellers in Japan. However, most of them are clay.Salsero wrote:Are there such things as almost giant-sized yunomi? I have to have porcelain since I just hate all the ceramic ones (as you have all gathered from my nasty remarks) and the inside has to be white or at least mostly white or I don't think I can see the tea. Oh, and under $50 would be nice. I really only need one, but I wouldn't mind paying $50 for one I really liked. Do I need to start hitting the BC thrift shops like Chamekke? Google hasn't panned out too well for me this go around.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.
I did buy 2 VERY large Arita dragon yunomi from JBOX for $45 each. These came without a lid and have an awesome hand-painted dragon design on the outside. They are white porcelain with blue painting. These are also available in a lidded version (futasaki?) from Japanese Green Tea Shops, but they're about $30 more. They also have lidded versions of smaller ones at lower prices at Japanese Green Tea Shops. The three sizes are 180ml, 280ml, and 450ml.
Only the 450ml is available without the lid from JBOX, at $45 when it is in stock. They do regularly restock this item.
Here's the link to the Arita porcelain cup at Japanese Green Tea Shop:

Couple of new acquisitions!
First of all, a pair of brightly coloured meoto-yunomi ("husband and wife yunomi"). These are Arita ware, and the design is tsubaki (camellia):

The next one is a small "chawan"-shaped yunomi with lid:

And a close-up, sort of:

All of these were photographed in available light, to avoid bleaching out the details. I'll have to start studying that photo tips thread so that I can do a little better! (Not to mention photographing them with tea inside them, too

Oddly enough, these were a Buy-It-Now on eBay for $4.99. I was really surprised nobody else had snapped them up.GeekgirlUnveiled wrote:I absolutely LOVE these two. I'd have had an impossible job to restrain myself from purchasing them. Local find?
