Huang Shen Mao Feng from Jing Tea Shop

I was very curious about this tea in particular because I've very much enjoyed Norbu's large-leaf green tea from Yunnan also called "Mao Feng", but I suspected it was quite different from the 'real thing', and wanted to see what the original was like.

Medium green, thin twisty leaves

on Flickr

5 grams in a 200mL pot with about 150mL of water, 150 degrees

First infusion 30 seconds, warm, sweet, a certain smoky/toasted/grilled vegetable background…..

2nd infusion 20 seconds, pale green liquor, the sweet warm flavor is still there, but the toasted vegetable flavor--not a bitterness, perhaps a touch of astringency in it--is dominant now.

Image

Ran out of time, so I added cold water and set the leaves to the refrigerator to try to get one more steeping out of them. But the resulting infusion, a day later, has a strong bitterness underlying a delicious fresh sweet vegetal flavor; I did not finish it. I also forgot to shoot the leaves after infusion, but they were pale minty green, long, thin, rolled almost into little cylinders.

I used a quite moderate tea-to-water ratio, and very cool water with short brewing times, all designed to moderate and minimize any bitterness. This is a tea that sat, sealed from the shop, for some months before I opened it, so it might have lost something re: freshness. Before assuming this just isn't my cup of green tea, I'll try it again--it took me nearly a year to 'get' Dragon Well, after all.

I'm now drinking Yame fukamushi shincha "88 nights" and Ureshino shincha. Even after comparing them side by side can't really pick up my favorite, both have some good and unique flavor that i enjoy. But for sure i like smell of Ureshino leaves after first infusion more. Maybe it's because they are only lightly steamed.

Less than a hour ago prepared my first matcha! Tried both, usucha and koicha. Really enjoyed it, now i'm going to drink matcha more often for sure

2010 Den's Organic Sencha

Got this about a month ago and opened it a week ago. I wanted to try this a second time before I commented on it. When I opened the bag I was concerned. No fresh grassy smell. Brewed up just like it smelled. Strangely enough it slightly tasted like Kabusecha.

After talking to Den...he said that is the flavor profile of the tea. If I brew it like Kabusecha...it tastes pretty good.

I'm enjoying an exceptionally nice session with some of Den's sencha Shin-ryoku right now. It started out a bit dicey, heavy-handed on the leaf, but with short infusions, I'm getting a very rich and lasting series of infusions. And I'm enjoying it in my Rock hagi, which adds to the pleasure.

Looks like a nice flute Ambrose! 1.6?

I studied Dokyoku and Kinko style under Michael Gould for a time, and had a couple of nice flutes. I miss them :(

After trying 38+ senchas this is by far the most oxidized tea I have ever received.
I am curious ... having had this actually several times. I had not noticed oxidation, and it was quite green.

The dry leaves had a typical Yutaka Midori dry leaf aroma.

Do you have any photos? Perhaps you should contact Den, perhaps there was a packaging mix up?

Good eye its a 1.65 med/wide bore in D From my understanding it should be about an E but since its wide bore it drops to a D  Im still new to it and I already want a 1.9 or 2.0 C/C#

Here are a couple of pics.

I brewed up the leaves in that little gaiwan with lower temps and it tasted better. It did not, however, taste like sencha, but rather exactly like kabusecha.

Working my way through some older Chinese green samples that I had gotten from Seven Cups (their sampler pack)... Da Fo Long Jing, Meng Ding Cui Zhu, and currently on Yin Gou Mei... might get around to the Yu Qian An Ji Bai this evening.

These teas are from 2009, but have been in sealed packed since today, so they have held up relative well...

Must. Drink. Faster! :D

I still have a couple. I still kick myself for selling my Bonchiku 1.8. I needed the money though. I would recommend getting a nice 2.4 next to play your honkyoku on. Very deep and meditative.

Wide bore flutes are nice. My flutes had little to no ji paste in them, as my teacher was from the watazumi style. More of a fainter, windier sound :). The only bamboo I have left is a hocchiku 1.8 that I fart around with now and then. It's hard for me to get to the upper octaves with it though, as I am no Watazumi  .

One of the local shops here. They are quite specialized in premium Puerh... but I think their greens/oolong are not up to expectations.

You know, the parent company was carrying a kabusecha earlier this year... there is a small chance, albeit slight, that you could have actually received a kabusecha instead of the organic sencha that Den's carries. The packaging mix-up would have happened in Japan though (just my guess).

I've never tried Gyokuro. So I brewed this up 1:1 at 144 degrees and it tasted like a totally different thing. Anise with some flavors of canned spinach (not in a bad way). The leaves were also darker than sencha. So this could be Gyokuro which might make more sense. I did contact Den's so I will see what he says.
