I'm thinking about getting a cube to shoot my work. What kind of lighting are you using?Geekgirl wrote:The cube makes it super easy. I just set my camera on a low tripod, pop the object in the box, snap, and move on to the next one.

This cube has a little bridge over it with a "color corrected" fluorescent bulb. I'm not sure of the Ktemp. I used a grey card for the first couple of shots, but there wasn't a discernible change to the corrected color, so it runs pretty true.
I would probably buy one of these if I could find it, but I know it was an expensive purchase for them. ~$200 +/-? After forking out for this camera, I'm thinking I'll have to make do with a cardboard box, some white butcher paper and a couple of shop lights.

*JEALOUS* Looks stunning, Seeker. For now I must get my excitement for you and others since ...
My Special Offer #8 is still in Japan. I am so anxious to receive it since a surprising amount of effort went into this piece.
... oh ... heh, still 4 of these beauties available!

I LOVE my San Sai...it is really a perfect sencha size for me and it has quickly become my "go-to" cup!

Nope, mine is not yet crackling. However, I have a Seigan rainbow chawan, very hefty bowl with thick glaze, and it crackled so much the very first time I used it I was convinced that it was a goner. I guess each has its own personality.Chip wrote:has anyone noticed a quick display of crackling on the inside of their San Sai?

Me again..
My Seigan Super Ao Oni-Hagi arrived today too!
Chip you used the word "stunning"...that is exactly the word that came out of my mouth when I opened the package.
I was mid-session with some fuka-sencha and I christened it with that...it looks fabulous with the greenness of fuka in it...like a beautiful emerald lake against a blue night sky.
I have not taken pictures of the cups I've gotten recently in Hagi offers and I'm not even going to try to take a picture of this baby...I can't possibly do it justice. I will continue to look forward to the great pics that everybody else shares!!!
Thank you, Chip, for putting together such schweeet offers!
Hagi on,

I didn't until I read this post. I just busted out my San Sai for a little fuka-kukicha and sure enough...crazing. I had only used it once prior to this.Chip wrote: ... has anyone noticed a quick display of crackling on the inside of their San Sai?

HA, I read somewhere that crazing is the term used for undesirable crackling ... crackling is the positive term used when it is desirable.

Absolutely right about that. Crazing is unwanted crackling in potter talk. US potters are crazy (hehe) about solving crazing "problems" in their glazes; they're afraid the microcracks will harbor harmful bacteria if the pieces are used for food.Chip wrote:HA, I read somewhere that crazing is the term used for undesirable crackling ... crackling is the positive term used when it is desirable.

Then don't tell anyone, my ChicagoPotter yunomi-s have abundant "crackling!"bearsbearsbears wrote:Absolutely right about that. Crazing is unwanted crackling in potter talk. I have to admit however, I am pretty fanatical about complete drying of pieces with crackling.

I could never get behind the term "crackling." Reminds me of when you put a marble in the oven. I also used to worry about crazing and its potential to harbor bacteria. Chip is right, the key it to thoroughly dry the piece. Crazing is a quality I actually embrace nowadays as a marker for the passage of time and a way for the piece to evolve through use.

Re: The unofficial, official HAGI topic!
I sometimes see some "vintage" pieces on ebay that I can tell had not been dried properly at some point ... IMHO.
