:o :D

Just received a package from Jayzo!

a new vase, a new chawan.

I am giddy with excitement!

These pieces are gorgeous.

I'm already totally intimidated by considering how to capture their beauty with the camera. :?

Sweet my man!

All that is straight fly ash and not pre applied. That's the real deal.

Sweet rare drip on that vase...and I can't wait to see the interior of ze chawan. I've got a Strommen chawan, from what looks like a similar firing, that has the most amazing crystal growth on the inside of the bowl. I'm wondering if yours has it too?? I like the form of your bowl more though. Guess we'll find out soon enough :)

Thank you each and all for your great comments!
:D
Here's a couple more shots of the chawan. None with matcha tho - gonna need some advice on this bowl, it's definitely gonna need special care and attention for use. I actually really need some advice from you all on how to proceed with this chawan (and I LOVE this bowl!).
Pics 1st...
shot from opposite side:
Image

macro shot of rim - note the lack of glazing at rim:
Image

macro of interior (area of my greatest concern/need for advice):
Image
(again, click to enlarge for detail)

In the last macro of interior - note the small holes in the glaze. This concerns me (pockets where tea residue can build up?) (also the possibility that the vitrified/crystallized material could break away and be consumed? :o ).
The feel (to the touch) of the chadamari area is grainy/sandy - and to me this sometimes translates as porous? (thus concern for any kind of leaching?)
Finally - as is usual with any new chawan, I soaked the bowl overnight in tap water. After a couple hours into the soak, there was a very slight smell of "clay dust" or "smoke" or "ash" depending on who is describing it - to me it smells like "clay dust". This odor disappeared after the 2nd soaking, which I began just before bed - total soaking time less than 24 hours. I wanted to use the bowl this morning, so I pre-warmed with hot tap water before adding the hotter stuff from the kettle. Even still, something occurred that I've never experienced with any teaware before! When I added the first kettle water (which was actually 176*) - the bowl made faint sizzling and almost crackling sounds - but no changes of any kind occurred in the surfaces. The sound faded and settled and quieted. So I added phase 3 water at 180*. The singing chawan began to serenade me anew! Totally concerned about this, I pondered, wrestled with my keen desire to use the bowl, finally emptied it of the water, and set it aside to dry. I decided to check in here for advice on this.

(btw, I haven't contacted Jayzo yet to ask him about this - other than my initial contact to inquire about the chadamari surface and possible treatment... he suggested a thick rice water soak. Concerned about the odor of rice water, I replied asking about cornstarch - no reply as of yet.
I will email him again about this sound and my concerns - but thought I'd check in here with my TC friends first in hopes that I might have some good information from which to proceed).
I wonder if continued exposure to pre-warming and warming will finally calm this bowl into silence? Of course I am hopeful of this.

all my Thanks for any experienced replies/information/advice!

Curiously, and excitedly concerned,
Seeker

edit/ad - just thought of this - no material of any kind comes off of the bowl, there's no loose material at all. Just the sound. So even though it feels "sandy", it's not loose - just texturally closest to fine sand in spots.

Can you post a picture of the kodai? I have some "theory" rattling around in my head...... but need that view to solidify some thoughts.

best,

not any kind of expert here, although I have thrown a lot of unglazed bowls, and fired them in the U.S.A.'s only Tozan kiln. A lot of those bowls make noise when I add hot water, and it is just the porous nature of the beast.

I would personally jump into using that bowl as fast as my kettle could boil. Your worries of consuming a little ash glaze? A little Silica is good fer ya, hahaha. Seriously it can't hurt you, unless you to eat a really large jagged chunk of clay, and that, you would hopefully notice before it goes down. And what better way to season that bowl with than rounds of good matcha???

Many may come at you with theories and remedy's. The bowl has been cleaned well. The only thing I would do that it doesn't sound as though you have done is fill it up with water at a rolling boil. By all means use it.

oh... and a question. Do you ladle your water with a Hishaku or pour it in form a kettle or a Samashi?

Live up and Drink up!!!

Thank you J and B!
I'll post a pic of the koudai asap.
And B, I am greatly encouraged!
Btw - I pour straight from the kettle, tho I do have a hishaku, just not the setup to really use it yet.
I love how your comments and sharings inspire me to delve ever deeper into chanoyu!
(I'll go take that pic now :) )

As far as the leaching concern, the bowl is not glazed, so you don't really need to worry about it leaching any chemicals/metals from the glaze. Even if it was, Jay's smart about his glazes. All that love you see built up is minerals collected from the ash and smoke of the wood (if i'm not mistaken). The puddle in the bottom, it's all from the wood. It's lovely!

Thank you 'Smells...' - again, very reassuring. I love this chawan, and it is good to hear from those of you more experienced. Thank you very much.

Fresh Pics. All are set for 'click to enlarge'.

...the flowers are in honor of you Blairs (I was totally thinking on what you'd said in a post - and as I was out on a bike ride, gathered this small sprig of beauty :D; aroma cup vase ).
Again, my many, many humble thanks.

(i'm getting excited about matcha tomorrow morning... )
