Re: The unofficial, official HAGI topic!

I used my san sai for this morning's yuuki yutaka sencha - and I noticed the
crazing!!
BTW - Chip - how do you know when a piece hasn't been dried properly by looking at the crackling/crazing?

How much of a problem is this? How long for adequate drying between uses?

ps - I am loving my Super Ao - so intense. I've just finished preparing it for use tomorrow morning. If I'm up to it, I'll attempt to share photos, etc.

Like I said, IMHO. When crackling is full of blackish stains and in other pieces of the same age it is not. These are Japanese pieces, used in Japan, and likely used for green tea/matcha. Why are some displaying attractive crackling, while others just look nasty ... same age?

I am far from an expert!!!

Drying, you do not have to fully dry between uses per se. You can pick it up and reuse it before it fully dries.

But after use, I like to rinse with very hot water, heating the clay up which speeds the drying, maybe. Then I leave it out in the wide open air for at least a day, and after that, I do not "put it away" for up to a week. Well, actually I do not ever put them away as they sit out on display awaiting next use. :D

I am sure we are all anxious to see more of the Super Oni-Hagi (Special Offer #8).

I'll have some sencha later this morning, and perhaps post a photo
of this baby doing what it was born to do.

Hi Vic.
Thanks!
Last I saw, there were still 4 left.
I love this one.
I'll use it for the 1st time later this a.m.
Then perhaps post a pic w/ tea, and some impressions on feel, etc.
Cheers!

Very cool, Seeker!!! Thanks for sharing with us! Cannot wait for #19 to arrive here! Ok, #2 and #19 ...

And yes, there are FOUR of these beauties left, Victoria. I hope someone adopts them soon before I am tempted to add a third ... and fourth ...

Here's that Ao baby doing what it was born to do! :D

The blues are absolutely stunning the way they graduate along the glaze.
It is light and delicately textural in the hand, and gentle on the lips.
I think the o-cha kagoshima sencha yutaka midori looks stunning against the amazing blue hues.
I love this vessel!
Cheers!
ps - my TC Deishi Hagi Houhin was the perfect size/volume of tea for the Super Ao!
:D

The little blue is indeed stunning. Smaller than I anticipated, it's very refined and delicate. The rough sand clay keeps it from being excessively feminine though.

My sansai is not crackling like several of you are reporting. That might be because I tend to warm my hagi before use? I have two little deishi cups that I do not do a slow warm on, and they both have fine web crackling, both interior and exterior. My SO pieces, when I use them, I prewarm with hot tap water (about 120*) then hot water from the zoji, and I get very little rapid crackling.

My personal opinion is that the undesireable crazing happens when a piece goes from cool to hot too rapidly. But of course, I didn't wiki that, so...

crazing:

One type weakens the integrity of the vessel, and the other has visual interest and aesthetic value. I believe (and our artists here can correct me on this) crackling involves the glaze only, but crazing can occur or extend into the clay body. You see it frequently in lower quality porcelain, and the crazing often goes all the way through the porcelain and can be seen faintly on the reverse side.

crazing on reverse, note fine line extending vertically toward the rim from the top of the pagoda:

Wiki page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazing

Excellent technical description of the causes, from the potters perspective:

http://digitalfire.com/4sight/education ... s_190.html

"Crazing is due to a thermal expansion mismatch between body and glaze. As a piece of ware is heated and cooled during normal use, it expands and contracts. An incompatible clay and glaze usually means the glaze either immediately or eventually fails by crazing.

Thus since glaze and clay are inseparably joined they must be expansion-compatible, no amount of 'covering over' this incompatibility is going to make it disappear. You may well lengthen the time before crazing starts but it will not change the fact that it will happen. If crazing is the result of an expansion mismatch between body and glaze, then the only real solution is to adjust the expansion of one or both."

Progressive heating eases the thermal expansion rate at the glaze-claybody interface.

Thank you GG & Intuit.
Very informative.
I warm my wares always (except for gaiwan sometimes
if I'm rushed), but not gradually as you describe.
With my Hagi, I will begin using this approach immediately!
I have crazing appearing on my sansai.
I'll see if I can produce a photo in an edit later.
Thanks for the tip GG!
