Geek, I am sure we are all looking forward to seeing some photos of the Super Oni Hagi Seigan Blue that you just received. (SO #8).

Interesting and logical. Like Seeker, I preheat but with HOT water. I had considered a slower preheating as well. Might be a fun project for a new Hagi!

The Sansai crackling btw is an beautiful attractive green. Interesting. I have been enjoying Japanese greens with it.

I quite like the new look of a Hagi, but also love the changes that occur. Once the changes start, I tend to enjoy watching the changes. But when they are new, I resist the changes!!!

Some Hagi I am more careful with than others, not in a nuisance way, but in an appreciative kind of way.

Heh, you did post it in the SO #8 topic.

A pair of these beauties arrived after a quick, no super quick 3 day journey from Japan. Zoom zoom zoom and wowza, look up in the sky, it's a bird, no it's a plane, no it is Super Oni Hagi.

Great pics Adam and Geek!

How can there still be one of these left, how .............. http://www.teachat.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=11255

... actually, more than Super Oni Hagi arrived, 7.5 kilos of Hagi (and packing) arrived, I think that is approaching 17 pounds. Big box, heavy, Hagimongous.

I am hanging a sign out front, "Hagi House." Of course made in Hagi, Japan by Seigan ... or Deishi ... or Kashun ... etc.

Hidehisa-san is out of town on business, so I guess the rest of us will have to wait.

My recent attempts at Hagi:

My first attempt, which crawled and pulled into big blobs. Not quite right:

My second through fourth attempts. The crawling and crazing is right, but the ash isn't wholly opaque and is mottled with reduction. I'm trying this glaze on my red stoneware body to see if it will work. Will also reformulate to try to make the glaze opaque & white.

Hope to some day emulate those beautiful hagi glazes!

At first glance, the first try looks pretty hagi-ish!
Still would make a nice looking cup. Keep at it and
good luck!

Hi Jason,

That's a wonderful glaze you have and your getting really close with this first one Jason however a couple things you may wish to consider. You might want to try to stiffen this glaze a bit by either making it a bit more refractory or lowering the firing point. Hagi-yaki as it is fired in Japan is really about a ^6-8 glaze. A technique used by many potters there, I'm thinking of Miwa Jyusetsu, will brush a highly refractory clay/oxide wash onto the chawan which makes the glaze crawl as well as providing a darker contrast to the white Oni Hagi. Another idea is to bump up the clay content in the glaze or one can always turn to single firing, which if using glazes formulated for bisque on raw ware, may yield crawling as well.

On the second glaze, magnesium carbonate can be used to induce crawling however it will not be random hence IMHO not as nuanced/interesting.

Below please find a chawan from a few years back....

Keep me posted regarding your research if you would!

Cheers,
R
