I'm pretty sure that lexan has been shown to leach BPA.

Ever since the big BPA scare, the more recent Nalgene products are BPA free and will say so on the product. I use Nalgene for my primary water container when backpacking / hiking and have no second thoughts about it.

I'm not plastic-phobic, although I'd be happy enough to abandon it if someone could come up with a superstrong non-shattering lightweight and clear alternative.....

my first hagi... did not live long. first piece I have broken... I have lost many to others who don't realize that ceramics break, and of course sometimes the kiln gods take vengeance for no foreseeable reason.

Oooh. That's heartbreaking. It broke in an interesting "V" shape, so it would make a really nice vase.

I had a good one a few months back. Dropped my gaiwan about 4" and broke the saucer...started examining the rest of it over my tea table and as I did I dropped the Gaiwan lid which hit the side of a small cup and sent it flying in to the rest of my teaware breaking basically everything on the table.

I have deliberately brought home very few things whose loss would significantly shorten the cat's life. It's saved me a lot of money buying gorgeous art glass and such. I have been very pleased to realize that my nice new yunomis are irregular enough to not roll well, so there is little chance that the cat will knock them over and cause them to roll off the counter. I am much more likely to drop them on the tiles all by myself!

I just hope that if the ever time comes I can see it as an opportunity to acquire a new one before I have killed the cat.

Last night I dropped a cup on top of my gaiwan (the cup didn't break) which LAUNCHED my gaiwan at 100mph straight toward the stone tile floor... :'( The only thing left were shards of porcelain. I was too crushed to take a picture... I think I literally almost cried, my girlfriend came running in the room when she heard the crash and when she saw it was a gaiwan she knew how upset I was going to be and ran to give me a hug.

Well... I guess this gives me a good excuse to order some tea at the same time as my new gaiwan :') *sniffle*

Sorry to hear that Rabbit! I am with you on being too upset to photograph.
That's how I felt about my first Hagi. Although I never snapped a pic,
the sound that it made hitting the floor echoes in my ears frequently.

Oh, that hurts just to look at it. I do remember the first time I broke a hand painted tea cup. It broke my heart. I haven't broken more than two more since then, and each time it makes me so sad.

My Deni meat tenderizer tool fell out of a kitchen cabinet today, and crashed down upon my lovely little Petr Novak teapot. I'd only used it a few times, and I loved it. I couldn't photograph it, it was far too graphic... beyond repair. Handle was broken off, lit was shattered into many pieces, and the body was cracked.

I really REALLY hate breaking teaware. My only consolation was that my first Hagi piece, a Deishi kyusu, was spared by good fortune, being missed by only an inch or two. Whew.

And now again using ... til a cat breaks them again! Or til just gives out ... whichever comes first.

It don't look half bad. Good idea with the hemp twine.
