He also has another very similar Biwa version up for $49.99 though. I'll admit that despite the fact that I have been following Hagi for a while now, I'm still often a bit confused by the comparative values of certain pieces. I have noticed that being designated as a chawan typically increases the price substantially, even if they aren't that much larger.

About four times the price, in this case, does seem a bit extreme though.

I'm actually considering getting the Biwa he has up right now. Based on the pictures, that may be my favorite SO so far.

This morning I'm playing with and getting to know the red shino by Cory.
I'm a little tempted to name it the Treebeard chawan, but I have another that competes for that name. Hmmm.

Getting to know this chawan will lead to a name perhaps.

Yes - LOTR, good source; I just can't help but think of Merry and Pippin quafing forest elixir out of Treebeard's cups, and that those vessels look like RF's chawan (at least in my mind).
Today's matcha - Yame matcha Sansui from Zencha, in a Michael Coffee shyrabbit EverChanging stoneware tenmoku and teadust and nuka chawan.
Cory - a little homage action.

Last night as I was drifting off to sleep, I wondered about, and then decided to share my very 1st chawan. Mass produced, probably acquired at Teavana (but maybe not, I don't really remember), came in a box w/ natsume, and either a chashaku or chasen, roughly $25.
Here it is:

I really like the glaze on this one still. But I have to say, as I was sipping my matcha, it tasted different that usual, the chawan was sort of 'dead' in my hands and on my lips. I got to thinking about banko and yixing and their purported effects on tea (for whatever reason, subjective or otherwise), and I want to conclude that artisan made chawan are alive. I don't know how to explain it, and don't want to attempt it here, but there is an energy and an effect on the tea for me from chawan lovingly made, hand wrought, sweated over, cherished.
I really noticed a difference in the tea.

Awww thanks!!! I promise to try and add more pics on the weekends at least. I have some new bowls to show off and I do miss having matcha, I just don't have the time during the week. Or the light to do pictures.

The chasen is from Yukka-cha and the stand I had made for me by an Etsy artisan to match. I just found out today that the handle will fit inside, nifty!
