Re: Maiko "Official" Japanese tea topic
ordered a little bit to hopefully tide me over till shincha. chose Maiko mostly because they seem to be one of the few vendors offering SAL shipping. EMS is not worth it for small orders.
Re: Maiko "Official" Japanese tea topic
I'm surprised no one has posted this before ....
Maiko is having a great sale on some of their better teas:

Maiko's annual "Thank You Campaign" has started. Some really good discounts. Lasts until March 31st.
Just ordered two bags of Maruyama Sencha for a mere 3000 JPY.

This is perhaps my favourite annual sale. I will wait until next month to order, and then place a large order. I usually order some senchas and some matcha.Stentor wrote:Maiko's annual "Thank You Campaign" has started. Some really good discounts. Lasts until March 31st.

There's Yamashita Jirushi on sale 100g for 3000 JPY and also the Yamashita high quality gyokuro tasting set at 3000 JPY. This is a great chance to pick up some really great gyokuro

Thanks for the heads up. I missed the sale last year, but this year I was able to order the Yamashita Gyokuro Sampler and the Karigane Tenkaichi special.

From past experience, the Yamashita gyokuro sampler is a ... blast! And a great way to try the full range w/o dropping a fortune.
I started at the cheap and worked my way up the cost ladder.

That's why I ordered this particular Karigane as well as the gyo sampler. I found with O-Cha that I enjoyed their Asa-Giri, which is a gyo Karigane, more than the less expensive gyos. I'll do the same comparison here.Chip wrote:From past experience, the Yamashita gyokuro sampler is a ... blast! And a great way to try the full range w/o dropping a fortune.

Oh, it's fun to do a blind sampling and take notes. Just shuffle the packets of gyo and pick one. Don't look at the label and brew it. Surprise!Chip wrote:From past experience, the Yamashita gyokuro sampler is a ... blast! And a great way to try the full range w/o dropping a fortune.

The entry level is passable, getting better and better to the top notch. I would want to know which is the one costing something like two bucks USD PER GRAM. Still am affordable indulgence albeit when only getting an 8 gram sample.
Re: Maiko "Official" Japanese tea topic
This is the top of the line Yashiki no Cha Gyokuro. $2.28/g approx. Nice stuff. Worth this kind of money?
Chip, what was your favorite of the 5?

Re: Maiko "Official" Japanese tea topic
It has been a few years since I did the sample set and 8 grams is only one attempt at each ... but the top notch one was the best by my recollection. Is it worth $2.28 a gram. I have pondered that numerous times and have not taken the plunge. It probably is worth it ...Tead Off wrote:This is the top of the line Yashiki no Cha Gyokuro. $2.28/g approx. Nice stuff. Again, it has been a few years ... it was good. But at the end of the day it is kukicha and genmai powdered with match with kelp thrown in. I was actually not able to really notice the kelp.Muadeeb wrote:Has anyone tried the happiness tea? It looks like an umami bomb: http://www.maiko.ne.jp/english/shopping ... ss-tea.htm

Haven't tried them all, yet, but Yashiki no Cha is tops, so far. Worth the price? Not IMO.Chip wrote:It has been a few years since I did the sample set and 8 grams is only one attempt at each ... but the top notch one was the best by my recollection. Is it worth $2.28 a gram. Here is the 'low-end' gyokuro, Yamashita Jirushi. I wasn't impressed by this one.
