Radiaction was detected in Kagoshima´s beans, below legal limit but more than normal trace levels. And is common knowledge that governments hide information not to alarm the population to avoid mass hysteria. I don´t know, I hope you are right.

I´m concerned, because I have discover this nice forum right now and I´m impresed with the variety of teas that people take here. I always buy in Spain(sometimes from Canada) tea from Japan, but I think that buy directily in Japan is better, more fresh, more variety and sincha that I have never heard.

I bought from Canada Sencha Uchiyama that is best tea to prevent cancer, but know I would like to buy all green teas people speak in this forum.

Perhaps buy from hojotea from Malasya, I would like to trust to buy form Japan but I concerned

I really want to get a hold of the new matcha harvest but I think I'll wait until Japan at least gets their reactors under control. I hope some scientists run a test on the tea leaves soon and assuage my worries. Wind can really carry radiation very far.

Had this accident happened in China I might consider not ordering anything from the upcoming harvest. Melamine, Heparin, Toxic Toothpaste, Nitrofuran in Fish, Chloramphenicol in Honey, Lead painted Toys, and pesticide misuse in Tea all come to mind.

210 Bq/L of Radioiodine was found in the Tokyo water supply, in one instance (and only one instance so far, 190 in another instance).

This sounds scary, but a Bq (Becquerel) is a stupidly small quantity of radiation, if you drank a gallon of this water, contaminated at this level, every day, for years, it might (strong emphasis on might) give you thyroid cancer.

Safety thresholds for radiation (for the general public) are set at levels that are ridiculously low, not just way below levels known to be harmful, but many orders of magnitude lower than levels known to be harmful.

Things could always get worse, but right now, people in Tokyo are almost certainly doing themselves vastly more long term harm by stressing out over the radiation, than the radiation is doing to them (which, in all likelihood, is actually benefiting them).

Except it wouldn't do that, it'd just give you cancer.

As for the poster above as per the 'safe' limits. There are no 'safe' limits. It's not like a chemical that gets metabolized. Safe limits are set based on the probability of creating a mutation, and governmental safe limits over time have been found to be insufficient in many cases.

Bottom line is that no amount is safe for someone who has a weak DNA repair system, and a huge amount might be safe for people with strong repair systems. You don't know which group you fall into... none of us do. So if you drink tea without getting it tested you are simply gambling with your well-being.

The thing is, most likely you will find a lot more of those radioactive particles in USA or maybe Europe than in south parts of Japan, where most tea plantations are located. Also you get radiation all the time anyway, probably that's where those "safe limits" come from. But of course, probably its scary since you can't see this yourself, like fire or any other natural disaster. This radioactivity panic is really similar to fighting with germs in daily life, which i think is really stupid, overrated. But with all this i still think nuclear power plants in Japan are too much, especially it's not handled by government.

The news right now (core breach) is far scarier than anything I've heard so far (and I'm a radworker at a nuke facility), but unless the actual tea is actually contaminated, I feel confident.

But you don´t know it. Nobody has tested tea radioactivity levels. Two days ago was 13 foods contaminated in Japan. Nobody knwo the real situation, level of radioactivity in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was 10.000 times the permissible level.

Today news say 10.000.000 times the permissible level. Filtered water in the floor is a very dangerous radioactive magma. Iodine has a half life of eight days and will prove less troublesome than cesium which emits radioactive particles for 60 years

The 10,000,000 X number was in reference to times "above normal," not above permissible level.

It is a moot point anyway regarding the 10,000,000 X number as later they stated, "The number is not credible," said Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman Takashi Kurita. "We are very sorry."

Now they are saying they do not know what the radiation level of the water is and will retest ...

I really don´t know but if the core breach I think is credible. I only hope they aren´t going to hide information know. Last update on IAEA say the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi plant remains very serious.
