Finalists for the primary contest will have only a cup and lid and an optional saucer :!:

LOL, this opens a perverbial Pandora's box on the interpretation of what is a gaiwan.
Fortunately, I considered this already (and in fact, I have this exact piece on its way, it is a beaut).
I consider this to be a "hybrid" and not a true covered cup as is a more traditional gaiwan.

So, anything with a strainer or similar contraption built in to the cup
will only qualify for a conciliatory category placement/prize.
So, you may submit entries for "hybrid" style gaiwan. :D

Clear as mud?

Pure Puer. Other than the aesthetics, the other thing I like is that it's easy to handle
for those of us who are gaiwan-challenged.
I affectionately refer to these as gaiwan for idiots, like me. 8)

The 2 "ears" of the gaiwan/pot are very helpful in reducing heat on finger tips. I wish they could add nice ears design to some more gaiwans and make them easier to hold :D

as an update, my dragonfly gaiwan is now officially diabled... broke the lid yesterday as I was rushing around to evacuate my home as the storm was hitting. hopefully I can find a replacement lid later... the small side was so perferct for a one-handed pour. at least I didn't break the whole thing... although that would have made me a post-humous shoo-in for the contest!

Sarah, bummer about the lid. Breaking teaware is always a sad event. Good thing here, gaiwan - lid = cup and saucer.

More than color or drawing, I think it is the form that I most love about the gaiwan. That’s why I am so drawn to the plain ones. Their gentle curves make them essentially feminine vessels or soothing landscapes.

The white gaiwan doesn’t compete with the tea for visual impact. Instead it frames and highlights the tea.

Submit it (I will PM my address) for inspection and I will let you know.

Thanks for sharing your lovely gaiwans, Herb_Master and Sal. And good luck, of course!
