i believe i got a wood fired shino chawan. i don't believe the pool in the bottom is glass in this one, but rather formed as minerals from the wood in the smoke and ash collected on the sides (facing the wind??) and liquified...dripping down into the bottom. please correct me if i'm wrong.

this piece really captured a lot of the energy from the wood...which came directly from the sun. i'm reminded of this energy when i look in the bottom of the bowl and see the sparkling green pool reflecting light back up to me...passing it along. :)

i love it! THANKS CORY!! this give was so nice of you..i don't know what to say. hey, i'll look you up and buy you a beer when i make it to hawaii after i graduate (if that ever happnes  )!

smells familiar ! aloha ! mahalo ! you`re very welcome

this piece is shino with hawaiian keawe ash applied. gas fired. all natural ash. no glass applied

cheers

cory

Just read this thread and feel like I've been walking through a ceramics gallery. What striking, memorable work you do Cory!

You can find Cory's TeawareArtisan topic HERE! Other artisans, etc create their own topic and can post their works as well as answer questions TeaChatters might have.

Thanks for the pictures, Chingwa (and Herb_Master and Smells_Familiar and everyone else -- some real artists with a camera inspired by these chawan!).

Are the blue highlights part of the chawan or are they reflections in the mirror-like surface?

Is the Ummon-no-mukashi worth $1 a gram?

No kidding, huh? I LOVE my black chawan. The color is so hard to capture on photo. Kind of a yuteki tenmoku, but less spotty. Yours is beautiful, I love that shape, so interesting!

I also want to know if the Ummon is super-duper-twice-as-good as the Waka? :D

Sal, I can answer regarding the blue that it is part of the bowl. Mine also has a highlight like this on the face.

Yes, I love the loose-ness of this bowl... it has an interesting energy to it :)

I really enjoyed the Unmon. I did a comparison between this and a Hibiki-an top quality Matcha last month in the green tea section. I do find though that the flavor has changed quite a bit over the month or so I've had it. If you do buy it I would recommend to suck it down as quickly as possible :) Not that it isn't still good, but it has definitely lost some complexness of the fresh rich flavor I enjoyed when first opened. I only drink matcha on average once or twice a week... other people may not experience this problem depending on their usage patterns :)

For me it is worth the price because I consider matcha in general to be a special treat, not a daily occurrence. Therefore I'd gladly fork the money over for the higher end stuff.

First I ordered matcha with my sincha.
Two days later I was gifted a chawan.
Fate had spoken.
Once I held the bowl, I knew it would be so wrong to use an egg beater.
The hunt for a chasen is over!
Here is my first bowl of "kiri no mori" from ocha
I used 3/4 tsp. for 3oz. water. (no scale)
Frothed up nice,
Surprisingly sweet mmmmmm

The size is 8.5cm x 12.5cm approx. Big and deep. Massive, masculine, and, muscular. Very quiet. Makes me contemplate the nature of people and whether there is something wrong with the water in North Korea. :D
