Biwa's still a leaker!

Treated thrice, hot, then cold, then hot again cornstarch method.

different angle & light:

Not gonna treat anymore, will just see how it evolves.
Love this vessel, don't mind the little bit of leakage (prior it was pretty much a funnel

).
'll just keep something underneath.
Cheers!

I am happy to say that after 2 treatments, no leaks at all. And this was a gusher.
I do a quick soak in hot water before each use and will have a nice sweat ring, but that is all.
*loves the Biwa* X 3!

I had a close call with my yunomi this morning. I left it out on the counter last night after having some long jing. I woke up late and couln't find it anywhere. I franticly searched the cabinets and usual places things get stuffed but found nothing. Then I thought OH NO!... I hope its not in the dishwasher but there it was because dads girl friend had cleaned the kitchen for thanksgiving. Luckily though I caught it before she started the dishwasher. Crisis avoided but it left me wondering how bad is it to wash a hagi with soap or in a dishwasher? Anyone have experiences?
Also I made sure to educate everyone not to wash my clay teaware with soap.

To cure your Hagi, you have just been moving it from hot to cold? Or have you all been using starch? I soaked them thoroughly and after I dry them there is not leaking. If I soak before using, they leak heavily.

Corn starch - 1st treatment hot, 2nd treatment cold, 3rd treatment hot again - all with starch. I always warm the biwa with the water I warmed the pot I'm using.
Interesting to hear that you don't warm your cup? And that you then get no leakage? But if you do warm your cup, you do get leakage? I hadn't heard this before.
I'm going to try it.
I wonder what others think or have experienced regarding this?

Gusher Biwa, first cornstarch treatment cold, 2nd CS treatment hot. I give it a soak before each use, never leaked again.
I suspect with Ed's, when he soaks his experiences capillary action, when he does not, there is no capillary action due to air filling the gaps.
I think if one approaches the leaker systematically, it can be completely sealed. I had so much fun sealing this Biwa, and a small leak with the Shiro, and 2 leaker Biwa Guinomi with 100% success, that I wish we were all closer as I would enjoy a hands checking these things out.

I wasn't quite clear, I do warm the cup, but do not allow it to soak. I think the leaking has more to do with how much
water the cup had adsorbed. If the cup has absorbed as much water as possible, and more water is added, then it starts to leak, if It hasn't, then it seems that it need to absorb more liquid before it starts to leak. The
heat gets absorbed pretty quickly, however.

Unfortunately, not much traffic. I would have to offer Deishi and Seigan kickbacks to create more leakers.

Like I said, capillary action. If the cup was "cured" of its leak, soaking would likely not cause it to leak. Seems logical.

I agree, it seems rational. I may have another developed a cure: make matcha in it. When making some thin tea I noticed that some of the particles filled some of the gaps in the clay. I tested it and it seemed less leaky afterward.

I don't need to have my Hagi cured...I need to be cured of Hagi
Chip is going to be no help whatsoever with this affliction
