Re: NEW! Official Teaware of the Day!
Jay, that tea pot looks interesting! Something new and unusual.
The caddy on the left looks almost identical to what I had found in Taipei, except in another glaze colour.
Is it thin porcelain?

Re: NEW! Official Teaware of the Day!
Thanks guys! The teapot is fun to use and I used it every day in Hanoi after I bought it from an old, cross-eyed lady with a street stall. An Instagram user told me to visit her stall and I decided to check out her wares.
The tea caddy appears to be medium thickness red clay, but glazed all over aside from 1/8" inside the mouth (where the cloth-covered cork lid seals it off). This was the last one in the tan color. They had dark green and light green ones too. I should probably have bought one of each, but I didn't have enough space in my baggage! Packing everything up to get home was quite the feat, and my baggage was 30% overweight, plus another 10kg in my carry on and over a kilo of tea in a separate bag! I thought the lady at the counter was going to charge me excess baggage, but she just told me my suitcase was over the limit, as well as my carry on, and laughed at both, before wishing me a safe flight (phew)!

Great addition to the collection Jay!
Love the minimalist caddy and the tray is inspiring as well.

Fun thrift store find! About 250ml. Unusual lid that lacks a hole. Still figuring what this excels at. Teabags ok. Large leaf tea that won't clog the wide single hole spout also works.

Look like that lid actually doubles as a cup.stevorama wrote:Fun thrift store find! About 250ml. Unusual lid that lacks a hole. Still figuring what this excels at. Teabags ok. Large leaf tea that won't clog the wide single hole spout also works.
Have seen those so called practical pots from time to time.

Right. That was my first thought. But then I thought that didn't make sense! Also the rim of the lid is unglazed which would make for a strange cup.Bok wrote:Look like that lid actually doubles as a cup.stevorama wrote:Fun thrift store find! About 250ml. The main issue is dribble, dribble.
I just brewed a tasty pot of loose jiao gu lan with this.
Re: NEW! Official Teaware of the Day!
I like gaiwan-style lids because you can place them upside down on a table without the rim touching it and without the lid rolling around. The old ring style is pretty good at keeping your fingers cool as long as the ring is tall and thin enough and both the older ring style and the newer concave drawer knob style are easier to grab and hold on to than button lids.
Aesthetics aside, I think gaiwan lids are more practical and it’d be interesting if more pots had gaiwan-style lids

Eventually handles like that one deteriorate. Bamboo unravels or worse, what hooks onto the pot weakens; hopefully not leading to hot tea & a totally broken pot. Bamboo dries out; metal fatigues.stevorama wrote:Fun thrift store find! About 250ml. Unusual lid that lacks a hole. Still figuring what this excels at. Teabags ok. I like to travel w/ pots that are not made to last forever. If breaking from usual travel mishaps, an "heirloom" is not lost; if someone I like admires them, I can give gift them w/o too much sacrificed.
Re: NEW! Official Teaware of the Day!
So Bok have you seen pots like this with the lid described as a cup?
Gaiwan style lid. I hadn't though of it like that. If only it had an air hole it might pour properly!
Those bamboo/wire handles do tend to be problematic. Thankfully this was less than $5. If I can't figure out the dribbling issue it will likely be gifted to someone else!

Yes I have. That it does not have an airhole confirms it too. Overall this kind of “practical” pots rarely are so.stevorama wrote:So Bok have you seen pots like this with the lid described as a cup?

More of an gift-shop kind of pot than for the frequent or serious user. Might be useful as a kettle instead (f it can take the heat!).
Handle should be no problem to custom fit another one.
