Hey folks,

What do you reckon about the quality of this pot's clay?







It was sold to me as zhuni by Yixing Teapot Shop. It has a nice pinging sound to it and feels very metallic but bearing in mind that the vendor told me it is very high quality zhuni (which I doubt because I only paid $110 bucks for it and according to him is a second hand pot...which I also have my doubts as it doesn't look like it has been used before), it makes me wonder about its real quality. Hmm, I already had a bad experience with this vendor which resulted in him giving me a refund for the two fake pots he sold me recently. I will report the whole thing in the corresponding thread very shortly.

I have not heard good things about this vendor. Maybe you should look for an alternate place to buy.

He no longer is on my list. Why those people you heard of haven't complained about this vendor's dishonest behaviour here at Teachat? Keeping things quiet is not going to improve the blatant mess of Yixing's pottery market.

That's a good question, I'm not sure. I only recently heard about this so I couldn't have been any help to you. I am sorry you had that experience.

Yes a very good one and unfortunately that short of behaviour is not going to improve the current situation. I told about my experience yesterday, over a gongfu cha session to an acquaintance of mine, a Hongkongnese guy who has been involved in this business for the last thirty years and this was his reply:

Are you crazy? Trust a Chinese businessman over zisha teapots? China is knock-off market haven...plus you are a Westerner, so...

Lesson learnt. I will be extremely careful from now on. Once bitten...

Red blossom Apprentice Yixing.

Clay: Unknown. (Appears a muted reddish brown.)
Size: roughly 150ml
Filter: 7 hole flat.
Age: New/Modern
Paring: Works quite well with Yancha, but due to its size I use it for the less expensive Yancha.

When this teapot was made 12 years ago, it doesn't come with a certificate cause it isn't really popular to provide certs then. Since the shop knows the maker, they managed to get the maker to produce a cert without charge. Some famous maker charge an amount to reproduce a cert.

Teashop translated the text on the cert for me...
-Teapot is half moon shape
-The cert is written by the husband of the maker
-Teapot is made in y1999 by the wife
-Design on the Teapot is carved by the husband
-The cert is written in y2011

I have seen this term, "garbage collector," and I just want to say:

I'm a garbage collector and proud of it!!!!!!!! I like the pots I pick, which is why I pick them, and if others don't like them, then all the better, since I will have a better chance of picking up another that I like!!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I want good pots that brew good tea, and I appreciate truly artistic pieces, I just see more value than what others deem important. Anybody with me on this?

Here is my first Zisha piece. I will shortly post numbers 2 and 3.
I got this mug about 2 weeks ago, and I love it. It is Zi Ni, I think it is high-fired and it is thick walled. Couldn't tell you anything about the clay, but I think it is pretty new and probably pretty low quality, but it is definitely nice enough for me!

I have been brewing a blend of 70% raw and 30% cooked puerh, which is aged 10 or 15 years (I drink so much with my puerh guy that I get mixed up on which is which, but 10 years in his youngest tea). I am thinking about cleaning it and trying some high-altitude rolled Taiwanese oolong, just to see, but I don't know yet. Any suggestions? Ideas? Comments? Thanks for looking at my baby!

PS-I spend waaaay too much time rubbing my pots down. They are just so pretty when they shine!

That is a nice mug you have there, and with the infuser basket the
ideal office tool. I am looking forward to seeing nos. 2 and three.
Sorry, but I cannot tell you anything about the quality, I am not an expert.

I can however tell you, how I clean my Teatoys, when I want to avoid
overlapping tea tastes (i.e. "reseasoning").
Just soak the toys in a solution of baking powder and boiling water, first a lot of powder particularly on exposed spots, then the hot water. Use baking powder, which usually includes some corn starch and some acidics as activators.
The corn starch will blot up unwanted odour, the acidics will cause the soda to react and help mechanically remove residue.
Let cool down, rinse well and most of the time - voila.

Use citric acid against tartrate, first the hot water, then the acid ...
Alternative: Tartaric acid. Do not use acetic acid, may leave odour of vinegar.

Against dust and residue, use soda, citric acid and hot water, again, first the water ... will react!

Guys, that clay is not a very good match for Gao Shan in my opinion, it will just come out kind of "muddy." Don't spoil a good patina over it?

+1 -Porcelain or Zhuni for gao shan. I'm guessing the mug would be best for cooked puerh. Maybe high fired oolongs, but it's a waste to not brew those with a TON of leaf in my opinion, so maybe not.
