Ode to the Kyusu

This Yamada Sou arrived yesterday. I cannot presently justify nor afford a Jozan which run in the thousands of dollars, but this is a really nice substitution! It is stunningly rugged but with refinements learned from his family elders. It will be interesting to watch his progression, especially now owning this ...

I opted for the raised lid versus the recessed versions. In fact I waited for it. Personal preference of course. I simply like the style of a raised lid.


The wall screen handled this Yame Organic sencha from Hakinowado in stride.

The clay has this texture to it that cannot be denied ... it appears rougher than it is to the touch.

Chip, I couldn't do it...seems like every few days you show us pics of these beautiful kyusu's, and you speak highly of them; however, each one is new and to me that means your existing supply, including the ones you just showed us days ago, have a lower chance of being used

How many do you have now...and a prediction - how many will you have at the end of 2014?

Sneak peek at the pot I just bought. Should be with me shortly. Was very pleased to be able to buy one of these . Haven't bought any teaware for a year so definitely made up for it with the Gisui and the Tachi budget for the year is basically gone with these two pieces but actually I really haven't needed/wanted anything for a while so what the hell! Will have to use them like crazy to bring the cost per use right down into the pence

Very nice Kyushu. Is it shigaraki? I thought Hojo ran out of it. Hmmm.... My finger is getting itchy....

He had a few tucked away this one was the only one without flaws. Yes its shigaraki rough clay. Can't believe I've got two kyusu-s recently that I've not only lusted after for many years/months but also thought were impossible to get any more.

Chip lovely Yamada.....I was close to buying but don't have room/tea money currently. Akira knows Yamada. I spoke to him about the artist and he said he's a really nice guy, humble with a great personality. Hopefully one day they will team up

Thanks Chip. Is it coincidence that the Gisui and Yamada share similarities and feel? They both have 30 hole direct filters, both use a similar part joining technique, and both pay very close attention to the spout which also looks like they use same techniques. I wouldn't be surprised at all to learn they both got taught some stuff by the same person/people

Hardly seems necessary to wish you happiness with that gorgeous new kyusu on the way--how about wishing that you get to enjoy it for a long, long time?
