Thats beautiful Buzz. I love how the much the white stands out from the clay! What personality it has.

Does it leak any? For some reason it just looks like it might drip somewere between the glazing.

Thanks, brad,

I've only used it for sake a couple of times (cold sake at that) at it hasn't leaked at all. I did fill it up with hot water when I first got it and I don't remember any leakage there either.

Seems Seigan's never do leak ...

Which makes me wonder. Does anyone own a leaky Seigan?

Or a leaky Deishi (I know the answer to this one already  )?

Kashun, Noutomi Susumi? Other?

And was this attributable to the clay or the glaze, or both ... in your humble opinions.

Humm interesting, I guess I never realized, but yes, it seems to only be the Deishi for me. After doing a quick inventory of my Seigan and misc others, it seems that nothing else leaks and all have complete glazes inside.

Ahhh, yeah, I remember that one now. Quite spectacular, but looking at it, I think you could almost prejudicially predict that one would leak.

Would you attribute this to the super oni hagi clay, or to the gohonde glaze, or both? IYHO ....

I had a leaky Seigan guinomi (sorry about the picture). It leaked like a sieve at first but it calmed down.

I only have one Hagi so far, and its a Seigan. It did not leak at all. After all the reading on Hagi I was very concerned about this and watched it closely, but nothing!

If I could point to an earlier post:

http://www.teachat.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 65#p141381

While this is borderline Leaking, I feel that should a piece be water logged enough prior to adding hot water to the piece it will "weep" as seen in that picture. I have had it occur in one other piece.

My Kashun regularly weeps like that, and I feel it weeping like that causes the progression of stains in the cracks on the outside of the cup quickly.

I am going to say, with my unlearned mind, that its more the super oni hagi clay than it is the glaze. I see a lot of gohonde on smoother clay that doesnt look even like the same glaze as this one. it weeps where the rough sand pieces have blown out tiny holes in the glaze.

It is just the liquid permeable nature of the Hagi clay, and while the vast majority do not leak, some "sweating or weeping" is much more common. I quite like the warm moist feel this creates.

Eventually you may get a leaker and it will likely be a piece made from the more "super oni." When you do, the treatment is kind of fun and brings you closer to the piece.

Yes, I tend to agree, with my unlearned mind as well.

Seems the rougher the clay, the more it is apt to leak, but this also seems to impact the glaze. Making the already porous glaze even more porous.

Deishi Biwa pieces made with super oni seem most apt to spring a leak. No others here are leakers, but previously purchased Guinomi and the infamous SO#4 "were" leakers.

Great Buy Iannon, I think I was eyeing that one, I actually haven't visited the site recently for self control, but I did not realize it sold. Now excuse me while I live through you by admiring your pictures.
