The Other Kind of Hagi

by Maitre_Tea » Jul 31st, '09, 00:13

I'm looking for some Hagi pieces, in particular Hagi Chawan. It seems that Shibuya Deishi and Seigan Hagi are pretty popular on TeaChat, and they seem like they're the easiest to find. Even though these pieces look gorgeous, I was wondering where I can find other Hagi styles. I know that Magokorodo, Artistic Nippon, and Rikyu have a decent selections of these other types, but are there any other vendors that carry a decent selections of these other Hagi types?

I currently like Mukuhara Kashun and Noutomi Susumu to name two. Another vendor is Zencha.

Da bomb I have referred to previously is unveiled by Noutomi Susumu ...

And matching cups ...

Hard to classify these 2 also by Noutomi Susumu. Is it a Wan, a Chawan, a Yunomi? 4.6" wide and quite beautiful ...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say ... or the holder. 8)

They are so unlike any other Hagi I have seen or held.

Has anyone here ever bought from Ryu Mei or Katsuragi on Ebay?

I bought many items from Katsuragi (or Kofudo). Fast shipping, accurate descriptions.

Ooooh....I bought one of each of those wan by Susumu Noutomi a few weeks ago - they are certainly spectacular! I would cerainly cally it a wan, as it could be used for several purposes....a chawan, a tea cup, or a rice bowl.

I have bought a bunch of stuff from Kats. You can pick up interesting "preloved" teaware. I have had issue with the descriptions a few times. Be sure to look at the pictures very closely, and ask if you are uncertain about anything you may observe. I have found it is often what they do NOT say that is important.

They currently do have a bunch of new/unused Deishi loquat chawan, basically all the same style, but each a little different.

Rye Mei seemed like a lot of mass produced stuff, but I have not looked in the last few weeks.

Yeah, I think just calling them Wan is better than getting too specific. Multi purpose Wan.

I'm not sure, now that you mention it. They were certainly two different shops on eBay - plus the invoices for Kofudo (kofudo_jp) came from Junko Miyoshi and the invoices for Katsuragi (katsuragi_japan) from Yasuo Watanabe. However, they are both located in Tottori-shi of Tottori prefecture. So, maybe two outlets for the same company?

If I remember correctly, the Kofudo shop closed citing a generally unfavourable exchange rate with the US dollar and increased shipping costs. Katsuragi has continued, however.

I have bought a couple of things from Katsuragi, one of which is a vintage Korean Teabowl. Another eBay vendor is isoflavojapan. I got my vintage summer bowl that I LOVE from him.
