Small Yixing

by Maitre_Tea » Aug 16th, '09, 13:00

I recently saw a small yixing (don't want to post the link lest someone swoops in before I do ), and I was wondering where I can buy yixing that are smaller than 100 ml. I'm looking for nice-quality modern Zhuni/Hong-Ni clay (because it'll be decades before I can afford vintage Zhuni). I'm trying to find a new teapot to dedicate more lightly roasted Wuyi to. I've snooped around on some of yixing threads here so I have a good idea of what vendors to consider, but I was wondering if there's a place where I can get smaller yixing.

Well, if nothing else, one of our own members' father will make it for you

Still awaiting my first order from them, but I've heard nothing but good things here.

Yes, that's one route that I'm considering taking...but at $180 it seems a little pricey. Is that the normal running price for nice-quality modern Zhuni? I've seen it cheaper at some places, but also more expensive at some other places...

Kam has some that are listed at 2 and 3 oz. I would definitely get confirmation of the capacity before placing an order since once I wound up with a very different size pot from him than I was expecting. My smallest pot, however, is from him, and a very nice one at 45 ml or 1.5 oz (though it was listed as 2 oz).

Chinese Teapot Gallery also usually has some tiny ones. You might want to try contacting him with your specifications and inquiring which pots fall into that range.

Does anyone know about the quality of the Zhuni from Black Dragon Teahouse? Such as this:

Can anyone verify if this can possibly be modern Zhuni?

Given the price, I highly doubt it. Compare some of their pots to Scott's Yunnan sourcing which are identical, and that would make it $5-10 max their cost.

Chen's pots are normally larger than 100mL. For less than 100mL zhuni, I'd suggest to take a look at Nada.
He has access to the real stuffs and seems to know how to identify old zhuni pot, but don't ask for the trade secret 'how'.
MarshalN has once told me about a pot, which from my POV looks like a zhuni, but in reality it is a hongni. So it is indeed very difficult to identify it. I would spend more on one real zhuni pot rather than two or three cheaper red pots (which are most likely hongni rather than zhuni).
Good luck with your search :D
