Labor Day 2009 Sports Fan, Participant?

by Chip » Sep 7th, '09, 00:29

Happy Labor Day!
(to those celebrating)

Greetings and welcome to a Holiday TeaRoom TeaDay. Please do drop in and share what is in your cup throughout the day.

(OK, I can never get the entire poll question into the allowed # of characters, so I officially give up trying. Thus, I will in the future refer members to the main topic for the rest of the question. Problem solved  )

Today's TeaRoom poll and discussion topic. I was eavesdropping on the TeaChat IM last night. Someone wondered if TeaChatters were Sports Fans ... or Sports Participants? Please share whether or not you are a sports geek in addition to being a tea geek.

I am looking forward to sharing the holiday TeaDay with everyone. Bottoms up.

Nope, not very much into playing sports and much less into watching them. Kinda tough in the home of the Florida Gators, but I have survived so far.

Yes, of Gong Fu Cha...and if you don't believe that Gong Fu Cha can be a sport, I will refer you to the movie, Tea Fight:

I'd say, "Maybe a little of each" because I don't like a lot of sports (those with water, balls, teams...) ... uh I'd better say I only like judo.

And it's the same for watching sport, I hate that but I really like seeing beautiful judo moves made either in fights or in kata form.

+1. Unless we're talking World Cup football (also known as soccer), which happily only comes along every four years.

A lovely White Peony is the order of the day.

I play tennis at school. But, other than that, I am proud to say that I have never watched 5 minutes of ESPN or anything of that nature in my life. :D

I have the misfortune of being born in America and loving football..real football that is, the one where people use feet the whole game. :P

I'd rather catch Bubonic Plague than play/watch sports :)

Finishing the last of my Floating Leaves Traditional Dong Ding today.
Sad to see it go...

Sal, isn't riding bike considered sport?

I have always enjoyed participating in sports, and am a bit too competitive for my own good at times. My fave sport currently is road bicycling in which I do compete on a limited basis. Bicycling is very exhilerating especially in the hilly region in which I live.

I also enjoy watching sports when I am in the mood. I watched much of the Tour de France this year, and watch some American Football. and Basketball.

Began the holiday TeaDay with Yutaka Midori from O-Cha which was superb. SweeTea enjoyed the holiday tea while Wulong did not.

Same here. Professional sports bore me to tears. The sports sports I've ever willingly gone to watch were a few where friends/family were participating. I'll occasionally watch Olympic gymnastics or figure-skating, but that's about it.

I never went to any of my high school or college games--I resented and still do the stunning amount of money spent on the athletes and sports facilities, when the other departments--music, science, history, math, engineering, etc--so desperately needed it and got nothing but crumbs.

Yunnan Gold in the pot this morning, long gone now.

When you do it, yes. When I do it, it's a form of humor.

 Well, anytime you balance on 2 wheels and provide the locomotion with your own legs, etc, you are still participating.

Not a participant, per se. Any sporty activity I do is for exercise or leisure (walking, biking, yoga, etc).

I grew up in small town America and on Friday night all there is to do is go to the football game. One of my best friend's had two brothers who had played football so she actually knew what was going on and taught us how to watch.

My mom and I used to watch the Cardiac Cardinals (they're in Arizona now, but they used to be in St. Louis) on Sunday afternoons...my dad never understood football; he thought there was something wrong with a game where ever one tried to run down the guy with the ball just when he got going good! He would be snoozing on the couch and we'd jump up and holler about some great play and he'd be startled from his nice nap. Watching a football game with a fire in the fireplace and a big pot of soup simmering on the stove is a pretty fine way to spend a cold fall afternoon.

And, of course, I live in the greatest baseball town on the planet...because we have the St. Louis Cardinals. When they were in the World Series in the 60's we actually got to watch games at recess in grade school. Our teacher said we were seeing part of the history of our town.

I loved watching my kids play soccer, basketball, and baseball on church teams while they were in grade school. It is a joy to see a group of healthy children getting all pink-cheeked and sweaty and having such fun!

We've really enjoyed watching our kids swimming on the school team. Swimming is a grueling sport and the meets are such fun to watch especially when the competition is good.

I've been known to lose my voice cheering on "my team"...yep, I'm a fan!

Today, so far, I'm enjoying Ceylon Vithanakande. Should be a warm day here today, so I'm guessing that later iced tea will be on the menu.

Make it great,
Dreamer

I usually run or ride my bike three to seven times a week. Not for competition, just for fun.

As for watching, I would say football (not soccer), rugby, volley ball and baseball.

Ippodo shincha this evening.

Definitely not...maybe like every 2 years or so I'll watch a touch of the Olympic games but I'm more interested in the beginning and ending ceremonies than the sporting events.

Like Riene I've always been a bit resentful of the money and attention given to sports while other areas suffer...my high school gave the very best to their American Football team but cut several art classes when the first of two art teachers retired...they didn't want to spend on hiring a replacement.
