Is this for display or use, it seems to have a shoe-polishy looking patina ?

Probably for display .
It's about 3/4 size of an American softball.
Shoe-polishy as in fake?

Not fake as such, the Chinese like teapots as ornaments as well as for use.

Some memorable old teapot designs are reproduced not as scams but as ornaments. They then polish the modern clay with something very much like shoe polish to give it an aged appearance - it is not intended to fool anyone, just intended to make it look more antique.

I found a source of Yixing pots on ebay 2 and a half years ago (long before I found Tea Chat), bought some and liked them. I seasoned them and used them they were good

I thought the price was so good compared to other online offerings I ordered some more.

Then I ordered some more, and some of these did not season well, colour kept coming off on the cloths after each bath. I emailed the vendor and he said "WHAT these are not for use these are antique reptroductions for display only"

They had a lacquer / lustre somewhat similar to yours - but without looking at yours close up - yours may be the real thing that mine were supposed to innocently mimic.

See if you can rub an unobtrusive area with a hot wet cloth, if colour comes off on the cloth it might be polish.
