Pot and cups for gyokuro and sencha

by coconut » Oct 13th, '09, 10:20

Would like your opinion. What do you think is the most appropriate teacup and teapot size for gyokuro brewing? What about sencha? I'm leaning toward high grade teas. Thanks much all

If you are going for high end gyokuro, a Houjin or similar that holds 3-4 ounces is great, can be a bit bigger. But usually with really good gyokuro, most people do pretty small steeps.

Gyo cups are usually pretty small as well, around an ounce capacity, so 2" or less wide.

Sencha cups can be whatever. I long preferred a 3" or less wide cup that held 3ish ounces or less, but now I also use some that are made for sencha such as Hagi cups, and they are 5, 6, 7 ounces or larger.

A kyusu for brewing sencha (highly recommended if you do not already own one) can be anywhere between 4-12 ounces. Most of mine hold up to 9, but I never fill to capacity. Most times I brew 200 ml or 6.8 ounces. Finest sencha I may brew 4-5 ounces.

I agree.

Usually 2-3oz for gyokuro and 3-4oz for sencha per steep for me. However I don't drink very often my gyokuro from little gyokuro teacups (1-2oz), but from my sencha teacups (4-5oz).

Gyokuro and good Sencha are not cheap. I tend to maximize the amount of leaf to water to get the most flavor and never use large kyusu.

For Gyokuro, I use a flatter kyusu. I prefer Banko ware, no more than 150ml. This is a good size if you are going to be drinking with someone else. You don't need to fill the whole pot so you can use it solo. A 90ml pot would be ideal for me, drinking alone. Preheat your teaware. Cups from 40-80ml.

For Sencha, the shape can be rounder. Same capacity as Gyokuro pot, or, if you drink big quantities, the sky's the limit. Cups can be 40ml to 140ml depending on your pot and how much you want to drink.

You'll probably get different opinions. This is just mine.
