I have a T-80 (I think) Kamjove kettle with hidden heating element. I have purchased it since it is much more convenient than western kettles (smaller volume and spout).
The problem is that suddenly the water smells and tastes different, with metallic, almost lemony smell. I have had this problem once before and thought it was due to the water, but the very same water comes out just fine with my glass stovetop kettle. The last time I boiled lemons and the off taste was gone, but I fear the kettle is releasing something into the water, which can even be a health hazard.
Have anyone had a similar problem with Kamjove?
Re: Strong metallic smell and taste with Kamjove kettle
which kind of water are you using?
i have a kamjove like kettle too, and when i tried some waters with it some waters tasted very metallic, but now in my lin kettle they taste fine.
i think that water with little amount of minerals and stuff, takes some of the things from stainless steel, but when i used a heavy mineral water the water tasted fine in the kamjove.
Maybe you can try other waters
peace

Re: Strong metallic smell and taste with Kamjove kettle
I use filtered and softened water from my homemade filtering system. It is a combination of water softener (ion-exchange) and activated carbon filter. I don't like to use bottled or untreated tap water because I am lazy and don't like to descalemr. Less wrote:which kind of water are you using?

Re: Strong metallic smell and taste with Kamjove kettle
I don't have an RO system, it is a softener based on ion-exchange resin. The water is not demineralized. The softener itself is one used in coffee shops to remove calcium and magnesium from water. The water itself is not corrosive. My kettle also doesn't have a submerged heating element - it is hidden under the base. I am still convinced that there is something wrong with the kettle, since I also tried to boil water in a stainless steel jar and it also tastes fine.Intuit wrote:Do you that when large public treatment plants desalinize surface water using ultrafiltration/RO (somewhat similar to your undersink system) have to add back dissolved gas to 'recarbonize' the water and add minerals too - not just for taste, but because very soft water has poor natural buffering capacity. It is corrosive to metals and piping and tastes 'off' because of the acidity.
I remember a post where a forum member told about something being released into the water by his glass Kamjove kettle with a stainless steel base.
Re: Strong metallic smell and taste with Kamjove kettle
The mystery is solved. Silly me. Tonight the water from glass kettle also had the same strange lemony taste. I have started to suspect my water and finally came to the bottles I use for storage. It looks like some of them (Soda-Club ones to be precise) are responsible for that taste. The water from other bottles tastes fine and Kamjove is rehabilitated
