Friday TeaDay 10/23/09 Annual steepage?

by Chip » Oct 23rd, '09, 00:51

Welcome everyone to TeaDay. Please do drop in and share what is in your cup throughout the day.

Yesterday we discussed teaware phobes, you can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. 365 days per year X number of cups or steeps of tea. How many cups or steeps of tea do you estimate you have in a year? Does the number surprise you?

I am looking forward to sharing this TeaDay with everyone, bottoms up.

I try to get at least three session of tea in each day, and usually on the weekends I have "marathon" runs where I can go through 5-6 teas...let's see, about 6-7 infusions (I'm pretty thrifty here), and... that's a lot of tea. Of course, I'm forgetting about pu'er or Dan Cong, which can usually go up to 15+ infusions...maybe I need to change my answer for this poll...

Enjoying some of Scott's YS Bulangshanyun...tastes okay, but feels like the Bu Lang has been de-clawed and neutered. There are hints of it in each infusion, as if the beast is screaming out for recognition, and is subdued by creamy simplicity

About 10 steeps per day, a little less than 4000 per year.

Matcha Karigane was my last tea of the day.

When I started off, I was probably doing 15-20 cups a day (a lot of pu'erh), but I've pulled back a lot. Part of the problem is that I only get a chance for a cup or two in the morning, I may get some tea at work, and it's late enough when I get home that I need to be careful about what I drink (although sometimes I'll go whole hog if I know the tea is okay). So over the last year, I'm estimating ~6 cups a day, which is < 2000.

I have a feeling this is one that people are going to highly overestimate.

I'm continuing with this vanilla green from Adagio. I've discovered that I find it less offensive after the tea has cooled off further from the 170F steeping range. . .

I would say 8-10 steeps per day during workdays, 15-20 during holidays so around 5000 I guess.

Less than 2k, because I steep about a liter at a time a couple of times a day. That's still a metric lot of tea.

Guzzling White Peony today.

Well that's hard to say, as I brew by different methods in different size pots. One way I figured, which was probably the minimum, was 3,000 cups. Another way, high end, was 4,300 cups. So somewhere under 4,000 cups I guess. Does it surprise me? No.

In my cup this morning Camellia Sinensis Darjeeling Oolong,
my favorite morning brew. This week anyway.

I really thought it was more but to be honest I guess it is only I am not steeping it. In addition to what I steep I am also drinking bottles of tea. Usually the Green Tea AnTeadote. So in that case WOW I drink a lot of tea and boy do I LOVE it!!! :D

I always thought I was a tad "abnormal" in the amount of tea I drank. Day in day out..... cup after cup after cup. This poll makes me feel OK about myself  .

I think I need "Tea-a-holics Anonymous".

best,

'bout time!

I did the math, 3.5 teas/day X 5 steeps/tea X 365days/year = ~6300 steeps/year. Shocked? yeah, thought it was more!!! So, I need to drink more tea.

Began the TD with a blend of bottom of tins sencha ... in a Biwa!! SweeTea enjoyed the blend on a quiet start of the TD ... till also joined by Ceylon, Bear, Pyrit, Wulong ... it was no longer so quiet ...

I started the day with traditional DHP, followed with fukamushi superior, and I'm now having Xiang Hua TGY. I'm experiencing a caffeine deficit caused by having a cup of coffee two days ago. Whenever I drink coffee it takes two or three days before I'm back to normal.

As a relative newbie I actually am surprised by how much tea I appear to be drinking. If I keep up the rate of 3-5 steeps per day (as I've been doing since May 09), that'll be a lot of tea by year's end! And yet there's still so much tea to discover, I will never exhaust tea, and that's nice.
