Saturday TeaRoom 12/05/09 A good read ... watch?

by Chip » Dec 5th, '09, 01:02

Welcome everyone to a TeaRoomTeaDay, please come in and share with us what is in your cup throughout the day.

Yesterday we discussed teaware focus. You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaRoom poll and discussion topic. Getting off the subject of tea today, and just a little about getting to know each other a bit more. And revisiting a question.

I watched an interesting movie this evening. I wondered, have you seen a good movie lately? Please share. You can sub with a book, or both.

I am looking forward to sharing this TeaRoom TeaDay with everyone. Bottoms up.

Yep, I saw a cute little indie movie called Sunday Morning, which takes on the interesting premise that the world is a very different place early on Sunday. Of course, hardly anyone is up at that time, so only a few people know. A very creative low budget affair. Recommended.

On the literary side, I just finished Parapsychology and the Skeptics by Chris Carter, which turned out to be a very down-to-earth and convincing case for being open to seeing parapsychology as a genuine science that seeks to explain certain phenomena. I had never given the subject matter much thought, but I found it interesting that most parapsychological phenomena (ESP and stuff like that) are not in violation of any laws of nature. Also recommended.

Enjoying some sencha for the first time in weeks. Mmm.

For me it is a book, or rather a collection of poems, by Anne Porter called Living Things. I stumbled upon it in an older post from The Writer's Almanac:

I then picked up the book from Amazon and have been really enjoying it. She has so much grace and expression; conveying her thoughts so simply yet clearly.

My last two good/great movies:

1. Mary and Max the clay animation by Adam Elliot based on a true and weird pen-friend story...
2. Medicine for Melancholy directed by Barry Jenkins.. a stunning, B&W indie movie on two folks in San Francisco and their one-night stand follow-up... chats on people, black people integration, sf gentrification... and a staggering photography..

and my last great book:
Murakami's classic Norwegian Wood

Excellent book!
I have just reread "What I talk about when I talk about running" from the same author.

Musashi sencha this afternoon.

I read a lot of books at once, and they're all around and on top of my desk. Many of them are theological in nature that I'm not sure would interest most people so I won't go through them. Some classical Chinese lit: I just bought "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" which I've barely begun, and I'm in the middle of the first book of "Dream of the Red Chamber." I belong to a book club as well - we just read Edith Wharton's "The Mother's Recompense." For fun I'm enjoying reading Qiu Xiaolong's "Death of a Red Heroine." I love films, and catching films I've not seen before on cable, especially older films on TCM. One really charming facet of this is their Sunday night silent films.

No tea yet!!!

Best theater flick I've seen in a long time was "Blind Side"... a really touching film which I highly recommend.

Watched Disney's "Up" last night on DVD... and cried like a blubbering baby for 75% of the film. It was beautiful, sad, alittle happy, alittle funny, and again, heartwrenchingly sad. Anyone with aging parents and anyone who can't have children (me on both counts) needs a big box of kleenex before you watch this one.

Puttabong FF this morning... and now i'm in the mood for chai after reading the chai thread.

Hm, I just recently finished The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives. Very accessible look at probability and randomness. Now I've moved on to Eagle Against the Sun. . .

Tea-wise, I've moved onto an older Wang Zi loose leaf sheng from the 1960s. I actually haven't started brewing it yet. It's sitting next to me in its paper packet, and occasionally I get a whiff of its wonderfulness. Wow! Can't wait...

And it's the perfect day to sit inside and drink tea. Dreary and rainy and cold outside...

I have seen good movies I would say, can't even remember movie names at the moment  , so must not have been great. I have not been reading as much lately, need to change that!

Began the TD with Hatsumi from O-Cha. SweeTea came a running for some, pretty "busy" at the TeaTable this morning as many felines stopped by to say hello and then moved on.

I recently read "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro and I read it in one day, because it was so intriguing and I just couldn't put it down. English author and about children growing up in a boarding school, but the children are "special" and you slowly find out why. The story and ideas stay with you after you finish it.

I will be enjoying some Shan Lin Xi oolong later today.

:( I realized that the last time I read any books was on vacation back in the summer and I already posted about some of them back in August. I do have a couple of books on order that I will probably read over my Christmas vacation.

On a recommendation from a friend, we rented the movie Dragonfly (with Kevin Costner) last weekend. It is definitely a movie that will keep you watching.

Thanks everybody for your answers to today's poll...now I'll have a whole new list of books and movies to check out!

Nothing is sweeter on a cold day than curling up with a good book and a nice hot cup of tea!!!

Happy Teaday,
Dreamer

I'm reading the most captivating and riveting stuff right now! Written Clinical Vignette Workbook, Theory Based Treatment Planning for Marriage and Family Therapists. Wow! So rich, and I just can't tell you the quality of wordsmithing in these works. :D
Celluloidally (there's some wordsmithy for you :) ) - the movie that is haunting me of late is "Where the Wild Things Are". While I was not impacted by this film as I might be by a blockbuster or any film with more in-depth character and plot development, the themes in this film are brilliantly presented and can leave one haunted; narcissism and the normal narcissism of childhood; the difficulty of that between toddler-hood and adolescence place/phase; anger and aggression and what to do with these feelings; communication and how a lack of skill and discipline with it can lead to destruction; longing; fear; dealing with our differences (or not)...
Powerful themes.
Wako matcha this morning.
Trying to decide now between a white or a japanese green.
Cheers.

In my cup this morning Foshu Hon Cha from Imperial Teas. A buddha's hand tea processed as a black tea.

Currently some FLT Fragrant AliShan from 08, past its prime but drinkable.

Wanted to take some pics today, but it's pretty overcast. Waiting for DH to get the Christmas decorations down from the attic.

I'll have to see "Where the Wild Things Are." I forgot that it's out, thanks!

I just finished Duma Key on audiobook. I think it's definitely among the better of Stephen King's sometimes excessively brick-like tomes. :)

Today, Fairy GodPoppet works her magic on a pot of White Peony.
