Which thermometer and scale should I buy?

by tastysencha » Dec 9th, '09, 15:27

Hi TeaChat members,

Long time reader, very seldom poster. I have quite enjoyed the green tea forum here as there are numerous knowledgeable posters here which means I'm always learning something new. So kudos to you guys for teaching me so much.

I'm looking to refine my brewing further by getting a thermometer and a scale. What should I get?

I looked at this for a thermometer - http://www.amazon.com/Taylor-Digital-In ... B00004XSC3

For a scale, I have no idea. Will any cheap gram scale do to there trick?

is my recommendation for a thermometer because it has a built in timer. It beeps when your water has cooled to the right temp and then it times the brewing for you. I have it and I loooooove it.
You need a pretty good scale. I bought just a basic one and I never use it because it's not sensitive enough..

I bought a scale off of ebay about the same as this one:

came with a couple gram weights to calibrate and is .01 g accurate..works fine for me anyway

I bought this scale from gorilla scales. It was cheap and works very well. Another option anyway. (They have a huge selection too)

(Edit: just realized it was the same one as the previous link! And it's cheaper on ebay! oh well ;) )

Regarding digital electronic food thermometers. I have tried several. Many of the Taylor are much slower than Polaner (sp?) But the newest generation Taylors are just as fast. But I still see the older models out there as well.

Scales, there are many. I have one from Upton which has served me very well for 6-7 years now, using it several times a day without any problems. Doing the math, I have used it over 10,000 times, still the same battery.

Its resolution is all the way down to .05 grams which may be overkill, but it is one reason that it did cost more than others at the time.

But there are so many alternatives today .....
