Greeeting everyone and welcome to another TeaDay. Please do drop in and share what is in your cup throughout the day.
Yesterday we discussed new vendors for 2010. You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.
Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. This subject came up yesterday when member IPT had "an accident." The name of the topic is "CHIP." Now not all chips are good, and some are dreaded by many. Many of us have chipped some piece of teaware, but not fatally. A chipped lid, spout, cup, etc.
So, the poll question, do you continue to use the item, and if so, is the chip a major annoying distraction?
How do you deal with chips? Please share.
I am looking forward to sharing CHIPS with everyone on TeaDay, today. Bottoms up.

Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
Other.
I had a gaiwan once that had an unfortunate meeting with my floor.
So it really wasn't so much the chips that prevented me from using it...
I'm currently drinking a blend of Adagio's Lapsang Souchong, Toasted Sesame, and White Cucumber. Not too bad...

I haven't chipped anything so far, *knocks on wood*
But yeah, I dropped something on the floor and have received my fair share of broken teaware by mail. Nothing has been usable, but I doubt I would use it with a chip. It would really bother me.

I have some pots with chips - and they don't bother me too much.
The banko I just received from yuuki is chipped in a very minor way on the underside rim of the lid - no worries. Have a yixing or two like that also. Again, no worries.
On the other hand, if one of my chawan were chipped - now that kind of thing might bother me.

Chips show that a piece is used and loved. Part of the process of life. So chips mark the passage of time. Comes with the territory.

Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
John said it so well! My 12 year old granddaughter loves the cup my mother (her great-grandmother) used and it has a chip. I offered to "graduate" her to another cup, but she refuses.JBaymore wrote:Chips show that a piece is used and loved. Part of the process of life. So chips mark the passage of time. Mariage Frieres Marco Polo "mystery" tea today - almost gone, so I'm savoring it.
Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
With me and breakables it's all or nothing - I either preserve it for years, or I drop it to shatter on a hardwood floor. So there's no chipping of anything I own - it's either pristine or in the garbage.
White Peony today. Methinks it's going stale, must be a leaky tin...

That's funny. Chip asking about chips
I knocked one of my cups against the faucet and it received a small chip. I bought a replacement (the same one). But I never threw away the old one and still use it all the time.

Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
I voted yes because I ordered a Brown Betty pot last year that came with a tiny chip in the top. It didn't bother me so much as make me worry that it would either get bigger or lead to a crack. I contacted the vendor, who was kind enough to offer either a new pot or a credit. I took the credit! But I don't use my Betty very often because I broke the lid - they sent me a new one, even though it wasn't their fault, but it doesn't fit exactly, which bothers me more than the chip. So poor Betty sits alone, unused, quite often.
I used my chipped paint-your-own mug for months because I liked it so much, but it finally cracked. Like it's already been said - chips just show that a piece is loved!
Nilgiri Nonsuch in my new paint-your-own cup this morning.

Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
Hard question to answer. Depends on the location of the damage, and also how it got there. I have a gaiwan that I don't use because the chip makes me sad. I have a favorite teabowl that I cracked, and I don't use it because I'm afraid the hot water will make it explode. I'd like to get a traditional repair done, but am having a difficult time either finding somewhere that will do it for me with less than a 12+ month turn around, or else finding the materials and learning to do it myself.
I have a traveling teaset that had a tiny soft chip? flake? off the foot when I got it (with full disclosure,) but that one I use regularly. I'm still not even certain it's a chip, and if it is, it's very smooth. Plus, I didn't do it myself if it is indeed a damage spot, so I don't feel bad.
I have a cheap yixing that has a chip on the lid, inside, but I can't see it, so I use it at my office where the cheap stuff lives.
I have a kyo-yaki chawan that is very beautiful, but the stupid seller sent it to America in its wooden box, without wrapping the bowl inside the box. Yeah, it arrived broken. I stuck it back together with epoxy because it was too broken to repair for use, and I keep it on the shelf because someday I'll find another one like it, and I want to have it around for reference.
Yes, I'm that crazy.
In general though, if I chip something, I tend not to use it again because it makes me sad.

Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
I think it depends on the piece. I haven't chipped an Yixing yet, but I imagine it would be very distressing. I chipped the lid for my giant, super-cheap porcelain teapot that I mostly use to make gallons of iced tea, and it didn't phase me a bit.
