Lower grade sencha

by bongoman » Jan 20th, '10, 19:40

Hi there

Currently in Japan and have been drinking the tea bags on offer in our various hotels and have been pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy them.

At home I brew premium sencha and was expecting tea bags to not be that enjoyable but am finding them to not be bitter at all and to be nice and brothy and flavorsome. They definitely hit the spot for me.

Of course they must be a low grade of sencha but it is a revelation and has me thinking that for my daily tea drinking, maybe some lower grades of sencha can be enjoyable for me. I'd still prefer loose leaf rather than bags.

Anyone else find that there are some lower grades of Japanese green that are more than adequate for daily drinking?

Not for me. I would prefer to drink less tea than drinking lower grades.

It depends on what you mean by lower grades. I find the lower grade Ippodo tea to often be far superior to more expensive teas.

I kinda gave up on this a bit. I used to commit a certain amount of sencha purchases to the $10 vicinity.

A few that were memorable ... Fukamushi Superior from Hibiki-an and Sencha Moe from Zencha which are both FF. O-Cha's 2nd flush sencha is a top seller there and it was pretty good as well.
