Tea without dead plants...

by amfx22000 » Jan 25th, '10, 23:58

Perhaps an odd inquiry... I have a friend who is a "fruitarian" (misspelled?), which means that she doesn't eat anything that involves the killing of a plant or animal, restricting her diet to pretty much fruit and nuts and seeds. (Since carrots, etc., can't be gotten to without killing a plant...)

I'm asking something odd on her behalf - is there tea out there that is gotten without killing tea shrubs? Is there tea sold where the leaves are extracted without killing the plant, or where the tea plant is not killed afterward as a direct result? Something of the nature?

I assumed not, but I'm taking it to you, the tea drinking community, anyway. So, who can answer my unusual question?

(And sorry that it is so unusual :) )

Tea plants seem to do well with the seasonal pruning/harvesting of the leaves. The harvesting does not kill or injure the plants. In fact the plants are quite pampered and generally look extremely healthy!

OUch, seeds... she's killing a lot of babies when she eats a spoon of rice!!

Seriously, tealeaves are picked at the teatree, they don't harvest the whole tree.

I wish I was a tea plant - most get constant pruning and care to make sure they yield the absolute best tea in the easiest way possible. I've never heard of tea plants being killed during harvest.

With extreme diets like that, make sure your friend is getting appropriate supplementation. She could benefit from seeing a registered dietitian.

I recommend 8 slices of bacon a day for all your nutritional needs.

Make sure you dip the bacon in chocolate after cooking, to get the most nutrition.

Usually when I start a sentence with "I have a friend, who ..." I am asking about something personal that I am ashamed or embaressed to admit. And if I would have these thougths about dying plants (murdered carrots), and stuff, I would see a psychiatrist.

I have a friend who thinks the above post isn't worth the time it took to type. He also thinks that people who spend their time discussing tea should see a psychiatrist - people just ignore him and pretend he isn't there.

I have a friend who has right now a big smile on his face after reading your answer Proinsias!
