Hiya everyone and welcome to TeaDay ... all tea drinkers are welcome here! Please drop in and share what is in your cup throughout the day.
Yesterday we discussed our personal tea of the month for January. You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.
Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic was prompted by newbie "Killjoy." You can read his post here: http://www.teachat.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 75#p143875
He made me wonder, was tea at some point purposely or otherwise chosen to substitute "something else?" Please share with us ...and the bonus question, END RESULT, has tea substituted "something else?"
I am looking forward to sharing this TeaDay with everyone. Bottoms up.

Re: Tuesday TeaDay 2/2/10 Sustitution principle?
Tea has pretty much replaced tisanes for me...I think it was a mix of concious and unconcious preference for tea over most other plant infusions that lead me there...
see when I was a kid I drank lots of tisanes but when I was a teen I started moving away from the sleepytime and lemon zinger and drinking bags of english breakfast and earl grey...and eventually I came across loose tea in the supermarket which really opened up the floodgates

Yep, subbed for coffee. Intentionally. While I haven't given up the coffee entirely (and still drink more than is good for me,) it's a great substitute.

Yes, as an alternative to coffee and No, I still enjoy coffee on occasion.

I'm going to steal your "bold answer format" bsteele, hope you don't mind.
1. Yes, in place of cigarettes.
2. Yes, I officially call myself a "non-smoker" now.
I can barely contain the joy.

Possibly, as a substitute for soft drinks. Haven't had one of those for five years now, and I genuinely don't miss them.

I used to drink crazy amounts of coffee. So I started drinking more tea and less coffee. I only drink coffee with breakfast now and occasionally a small cup after dinner. During the day only tea. So it worked.
That's another thing I have in common with you. Even though I myself never liked soda, but since I make my own iced tea my kids don't even ask for soda anymore.Trey win... wrote:Possibly, as a substitute for soft drinks. Haven't had one of those for five years now, and I genuinely don't miss them.

Re: Tuesday TeaDay 2/2/10 Sustitution principle?
Short answer: yes (soda) and bonus question: not really.
Long answer: I've been drinking tea since I was at least 10, starting to explore the last 3-4 years, but slowly. A month or so ago I decided I really needed to cut back on soda intake. I've been trying to watch what I eat - not really diet - and the first thing to go was 1-2 sodas a day. Not that I'm trying to lose massive amounts of weight, but 5-10 lbs would put me back at a healthier weight - and then I don't have to go buy new clothes. I hate shopping. But back to the point, I find that tea gives me a greater variety, I feel better, etc. And even after just a few weeks, I don't crave sodas, but I do drink probably 1 per week. Usually as a mixer...
This morning - earl grey again. I need to bring in some variety for work. Maybe oolong...

Tea has pretty much replaced soda for me while it was unintentional at first. I did plan on tea replacing coffee but I haven't completely given up on coffee...just had 2 double shots for a study session last night.

The first winter I had to pay for my own heating bill, tea subbed for turning the thermostat up. I kept it around a cozy 60-ish degrees and tried to always have a cup of tea in my hand.
The next winter I moved to an apartment where we couldn't control the thermostat and during the winter it was around 80 degrees inside, so tea subbed then to cool me down.
This is the first winter I have kept the thermostat at a reasonable level.

No and no.
Started drinking tea as a child during WWII (yeh, I'm older than dirt
) and never even tried coffee until around age 42, when i went to Italy and discovered cappucino!
Still don't really drink "coffee," I like milk with coffee in it.
No tea yet today. Probably will try another new sample today.
Welcome, Killjoy.

Re: Tuesday TeaDay 2/2/10 Sustitution principle?
Tea replaced coffee for me. It's been 13 months and one day since my last cup of java. Honestly, I only miss it following a good meal at a restaurant because I've yet to find one that serves good tea.
As for subbing something else, I have cut down on soft drink intake at home (maybe one or two a week), but have yet to find a good solution for drinking tea at work (and I've tried darn near every option).
Wish I could sub tea for work
