The most hilarious part is the starting bid was $2... I feel this is either someone has something special that they did not know that they had. Or Someone tried to generate interest in the cup with a few different accounts blowing up the bids.

There are about 250 viewers on that page, so probably some special cup recognized by people knowing specifically about it? If the seller uses shill bidding ,then he would either end up paying $200 ebay fee, or be banned by ebay, either way, not worth it.

Even it's a great antique, what I never understand is how people could buy $1000+ stuff just based on ebay photos , without really seeing the item.

Oh I think it is all legit. That cup should command about $200 dollars.
I think it is just a case of two bidders wanting to complete their set, both really wanting it bad. The seller knew it would take off. But not like that, wow. The cup comes in several different colors, the black getting harder and harder to find. I wanted it myself, which is why I was watching. But I would not have gone over $100.

You and me both. Trust me there are plenty of sets across the mid-west in lovely china hutches never being used. Of course, heh, that is probably the fate of this one too.

I looked at that teacup and there was nothing special, it is machiene made porcelain cup, no colored hand painting, not clear and thin handmade body, not like those chawans on maiko`s porclain special shop, on those you can see enourmous handwork, it radiates even from the pictures, but that cup that sold for 1700 $, it was probably bought by a rich person with no knowledge of porcelain, there are people who get rich and do not cultivate their taste.
I just happen to be in the posesion of an around 100 year, made in Meisen, handmade body, real gold hand pain in color, and eggshell thin almost transparent cup, it has the weight of a feather, in comparison with my british style teaware that cup is worthless.
If people pay so well on ebay I can sell my set and buy myself a Ferrarri.

Look at this cup, it is the exact same cup in blue and it sells for 19 $, that was a big lesson for who bought it.

Cups or whatever are worth as much as what one ... or two people are willing to bid something up to, even if it is irrational.

Well yeah, I already pointed that out, it is that the black color is becoming rare. If you are happy with blue, then yes, there are plenty to go around. And as Chip says, it's all in what someone is willing to pay. No it's not hand painted or of any great quality. Same is true with baseball cards, comic books, etc. It is all in the rarity and what someone is willing to pay.

Oni, actually, quite the contrary. Most of the people buying expensive things on eBay tend to know what they're doing. If you watch yixing pots long enough, you'd know that all the good antique ones are snapped up at high prices. The nice, old ones never go for a low price. The crappy, fake ones never go for a high price. In fact, most of these auctions that start at $1 or $9.99 or however low tend to be the ones where the seller knows it'll take off.

Try watching Yixing pots for a while on eBay -- you'll see what I'm talking about.

Reminds me of this, by the way

$13000 for a game that isn't worth playing -- it's all in the collector's value. To us it's just some old crappy game.

No kidding! Is there something special about that Nintendo that I'm missing? I'd sell mine in a hartbeat for 1/10th of that price.

And the teacup... I'd walk past that in a Goodwill and probably never even think of throwing down 50c for it. The internet has really changed the way collectors shop, eh?
